Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

In support of innovation and new learning experiences for youth, up to $400,000 in funding will be provided to 37 schools and organizations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. The Youth Innovation initiative helps create awareness of the value of innovation in the province’s high-growth resource and non-resource based industries. The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Cultural and Rural Development, made the announcement this morning at St. Bernard’s Elementary in Witless Bay. He was joined by the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs and MHA for Ferryland.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador today released Live Here, Work Here, Belong Here, A Population Growth Strategy for Newfoundland and Labrador, 2015-2025. The strategy is a government-wide approach for supporting individuals and families who choose Newfoundland and Labrador as their home. Through four five-year action plans focused on workforce, families, communities and immigration, the strategy will highlight everything that Newfoundland and Labrador has to offer.

The Provincial Government has provided 22 regional visitor information centres throughout Newfoundland and Labrador with a total of $143,500 in operational support through the Visitor Information Centre Program.

The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, will announce funding for youth innovation projects at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow (Thursday, June 25) at St. Bernard's Elementary in Witless Bay. Recognizing a commitment to community and personal development, the Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, presented 37 young people with the Bronze Standard of Achievement yesterday (Tuesday, June 23) to mark their successful participation in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Program. The ceremony was held at the Confederation Building in St. John's.

House of Assembly

The spring sitting of the House of Assembly concluded yesterday with several new acts and amendments being passed, most notably regarding protection of privacy, teachers' pension sustainability and changes to the House of Assembly Act.

Kevin Pollard, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister Responsible for the Office of Public Engagement, will present awards at the Seniors Resource Centre Volunteer and Supporters Appreciation event tomorrow (Thursday, June 25) at 3:00 p.m. The event will take place at the Seniors Resource Centre, Bally Rou Building, 370 Torbay Road, St. John’s.

Environment and Conservation

The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Environment and Conservation and Minister Responsible for the Office of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency and the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board, joined his federal, territorial and provincial counterparts at the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) meeting, which concluded yesterday afternoon in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Three groups of students province-wide will receive iPads for themselves and their schools by proving they’re HotShots at energy efficiency and conservation. The Honourable Dan Crummell, in his capacity as Minister Responsible for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, today announced that students from Menihek High School in Labrador City, St. Paul’s Junior High in St. John’s, and Xavier Junior High School in Deer Lake are winners of the HotShots contest for students. The event will commence at 10:30 a.m. at the Manuels River Hibernia Interpretation Centre in Conception Bay South.

A new campaign aimed at redeveloping a centre in support of therapeutic riding programs that help children and youth with disabilities explore their abilities was launched today in St. John’s by Rainbow Riders. The Provincial Government is investing $250,000 in the campaign, Raise It Up.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, was at the Soccer Hut (Topsail Soccer Pitch) in Conception Bay South this morning to announce an $880,000 investment for infrastructure upgrades to sport and recreation facilities in preparation for the 2016 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games.

Transportation and Works

The Department of Transportation and Works is advising motorists that the Avondale Access Road, Route 63, will be closed to through traffic at Hannifan’s Road tomorrow from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for replacement of a culvert.

Natural Resources

The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources, is pleased with the news that the Government of Canada has approved an application by Paladin Energy Ltd. of Australia for majority ownership of a proposed uranium mine in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Transportation and Works

The Department of Transportation and Works is advising motorists that the Outer Ring Road between Portugal Cove Road and Thorburn Road will be closed this Sunday, June 28, from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The closure is required to enable clean-up efforts.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

I rise to highlight the ongoing work of the Agriculture in the Classroom and Little Green Thumbs Programs in providing hands-on agricultural learning experiences to students throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
