Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

The Honourable Judy Foote, Minister of Public Services and Procurement and Member of Parliament for Bonavista-Burin-Trinity, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), today announced federal funding of $547,166 for four projects in the town while the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, announced a Provincial Government investment of $342,564 in two of these projects.

Municipal Affairs

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs, congratulated Fire Chief Cecil Kerr of the Gilliams Volunteer Fire Department today on receiving the Volunteer Fire Chief of the Year Award from Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs. Chief Kerr received the award at an event hosted by the association during its Fire Rescue Canada Conference in St. John’s this week.

Residents of the Happy Valley-Goose Bay area are advised that provincial wildlife staff and conservation officers were successful in capturing and relocating three wolves believed to be involved in two recent incidences involving dogs in the community.

The Honourable Cathy Bennett, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board, will address the Canadian Tax Foundation’s St. John’s Tax Seminar today (Friday, September 30). The address will take place at the Harbourview Ballroom of the Delta Hotel beginning at 12:45 p.m.

Over the coming weeks, public roundtable consultations will occur for the review of the provincial public library system. These consultations will run from October 5 to November 2, and will consist of 10 public roundtable engagement sessions, as well as online surveys and written submissions.

The Department of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour advises that the final session for consultations on the Apprenticeship Wage Subsidy program scheduled for Labrador City tomorrow (Friday, September 30) has been cancelled due to a lack of participants.

This Sunday, October 1, tour operators from around the world and tourism providers from Atlantic Canada will gather in Fredericton, New Brunswick, for Atlantic Canada Showcase (ACS) with the goal of bringing more visitors to Atlantic Canada.

House of Assembly

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the 48th General Assembly held its third meeting on September 28. The Office of the Auditor General briefed the committee on their work and the relationship between that office and the committee. The committee also discussed the Report of the PAC of the 47th General Assembly which will be tabled when the House reconvenes.

Justice and Public Safety

On September 22, fish and wildlife enforcement officers from the Roddickton and Corner Brook detachments conducted an operation in the Croque area of the Northern Peninsula. The Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Division had recently received several complaints from the public of illegal night hunting of moose including hunting from vehicles after dark, using artificial lights, and shooting from vehicles.

Premier Ball, Minister Coady and I met with President Lampe and Minister Darryl Shiwak of the Nunatsiavut Government regarding their concerns relating to methylmercury on September 26.

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Transportation and Works, met with federal, provincial and territorial colleagues yesterday (Wednesday, September 28) at the fall 2016 meeting of the Council of Ministers Responsible for Transportation and Highway Safety in Toronto.
