Mr. Speaker, I rise in this Honourable House today to offer condolences to the family and friends of James McGrath – former Member of the House of Assembly, Member of Parliament, federal Cabinet minister and Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. To honour him, flags at Provincial Government buildings will be lowered to half-mast until sunset on the day of his funeral.

Amendments to the Financial Administration Act for Public Accounts received second reading in the House of Assembly yesterday. These amendments include the tabling of public accounts on or before October 31 of the following fiscal year. During the years where the fixed date provincial general election occurs, the Public Accounts will be issued no less than 15 days before the date of the election.

The Provincial Government recently announced organizational changes, which included establishing a new Department of Tourism, Industry and Innovation. The name chosen for the department reflected its focus on supporting industry development, but had the unintended consequence of causing concern in the arts and cultural community.

Health and Community Services

A further step in the province’s Opioid Action Plan has been achieved with the successful development of a new mandatory safe prescribing course for physicians. Developed in partnership with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador and Memorial University’s Faculty of Medicine, the course offers focused instruction on safe and appropriate prescribing practices for opioids, stimulants and benzodiazepines.

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Innovation, will hold a media availability today (Monday, February 27) at 11:30 a.m. in front of the House of Assembly.

The Provincial Government is establishing a new Workforce Innovation Centre at College of the North Atlantic’s Corner Brook campus. The centre will support and fund activities, research, designs and projects that demonstrate innovation and identify methods to better assists individuals prepare for, find, return to, or maintain sustainable employment.
