The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, will join the Central Regional Meeting of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador to launch the Welcoming Communities Initiative. The announcement will take place at the Mount Peyton Hotel, Grand Falls-Windsor, tomorrow (Friday, April 20) at 12.30 p.m.

The Provincial Government along with health authorities and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary are introducing a new policing model to respond to people experiencing a mental health crisis. Mobile crisis intervention teams have been established in St. John’s and Labrador West. The new policing model, called the Memphis model, involves a mental health worker and a police officer working together in the community.

The Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, will bring greetings at the Newfoundland and Labrador Organization of Women Entrepreneurs (NLOWE) 2018 Annual Conference today (Thursday, April 19) at noon. The conference is being held at the Delta Hotel and Conference Centre, St. John’s.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, today announced applications are now being accepted from employers for this year’s Job Creation Partnerships (JCP) program. Budget 2018 allocates $10.5 million to the program through the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Market Development Agreement.

The Honourable Tom Osborne, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board, will speak at the Exploits Regional Chamber of Commerce dinner tomorrow (Thursday, April 19). The event takes place at the Royal Canadian Legion, Queen Street, Grand Falls-Windsor, beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Service NL, will speak at the Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Safety Association (NLCSA) conference tomorrow (Thursday, April 19) at Cineplex, Avalon Mall, Kenmount Road, St. John’s. Minister Gambin-Walsh will speak at 8:30 a.m.

Mr. Speaker, this morning I had to the pleasure to join the Chief of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC), Joe Boland, and the Mayor of the Town of Conception Bay South (CBS), Terry French to announce a new Royal Newfoundland Constabulary detachment for the Town of Conception Bay South.

Mr. Speaker, Newfoundland and Labrador has the highest automobile insurance rates in Atlantic Canada - rates which have steadily increased over the past 13 years since the last review of the province’s insurance industry.

Office of the Child and Youth Advocate

The Office of the Child and Youth Advocate is launching a comprehensive, independent Review of the treatment, experiences and outcomes of Inuit children and youth in the Newfoundland and Labrador child protection system. The Review will identify deficiencies, explore promising and best practices, and make recommendations for improved outcomes within an appropriate cultural context. The Nunatsiavut Government approached Child and Youth Advocate Jackie Lake Kavanagh to request her office conduct an independent Review.

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General, was today joined by Joe Boland, Chief of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC), and Terry French, Mayor of the Town of Conception Bay South (CBS), to announce a new Royal Newfoundland Constabulary detachment for the Town of Conception Bay South.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

Residents of Taiwan who come to Newfoundland and Labrador to live, study or work will now have their drivers licences recognized without needing to complete a written, visual or road test examination. The agreement also allows the same for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians living in Taiwan.

Mr. Speaker, as announced on April 5, applications are now being accepted for Summer Student Employment Programs.

Education and Early Childhood Development

Mr. Speaker, to increase exposure to coding and participation in youth technology experience programs, the Provincial Government announced $250,000 to support a partnership with Brilliant Labs for students in our K-12 schools with hands-on participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics-focused activities.

Mr. Speaker, I rise in this Honourable House today to celebrate and recognize the tireless work of our province’s volunteers. National Volunteer Week runs from April 15 to 21 and is a time to thank volunteers throughout Newfoundland and Labrador for their contributions to our communities.
