Children, Seniors and Social Development

The Honourable Lisa Dempster, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, announced today that 12 municipalities have been awarded Age-Friendly Community Grants totalling $90,000.

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General, will speak at the Rotary Club of St. John’s Luncheon tomorrow (Thursday, April 26). The event takes place at the Sheraton Newfoundland Hotel, 115 Cavendish Square, St. John's, beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

Beginning on Monday, April 30, the Department of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation will engage cultural stakeholders on the development of a new Cultural Action Plan for the province. Revitalizing the approach to supporting culture through a new Cultural Action Plan is a commitment that was set out in The Way Forward.

Education and Early Childhood Development

The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, will bring greetings at the Canada 2067 Let’s Talk Science Youth Summit tomorrow (Thursday April 26). The event will take place at the St. John’s Convention Centre, Bowring Ballroom, located at 50 New Gower Street, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner

In our most recent reporting period (January 1 — March 31, 2018), the OIPC received 58 privacy breach reports under the ATIPPA, 2015 from 22 public bodies. This is down from the 59 reports from 20 public bodies received in the previous reporting period.

House of Assembly

The Honourable Perry Trimper, Speaker of the House of Assembly, tabled a report today on his recent visit to the Republic of Turkey. On December 7, 2017, the House of Assembly unanimously passed a resolution requesting that the Speaker travel to Turkey as an emissary of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador to advance discussions toward a shared goal of establishing a monument commemorating the experience of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment at Gallipoli during the First World War.

Mr. Speaker, this morning I was pleased to join the Honourable Premier as we announced 22 organizations, representing a broad cross-section of society, have been selected to participate in phase one of multi-year funding.

Mr. Speaker, our government is committed to safe and sustainable communities, and a key component is improving accessibility and equity. I rise today to remind the people of our province that the amendments to the Buildings Accessibility Regulations under the Buildings Accessibility Act came into force on April 23.

“We are Connected – Control–Alt–Delete: Control Data, Use Alternatives, and Delete Risks” is the theme of the 2018 APSIM Conference. To this end, the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner, together with the College of the North Atlantic; the Office of the Chief Information Officer; the Department of Health and Community Services; Memorial University; Eastern Health; the ATIPP Office, the Department of Justice and Public Safety; and the Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Health Information have developed a conference that promotes collaboration and builds awareness of the overlap and interplay between the access, privacy, security and information management communities. Our goal is to facilitate our ability to assist each other in managing, protecting and securing information.

Department of Fisheries and Land Resources

Mr. Speaker, I rise today on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to commemorate the life of Arthur Gill, a true pioneer, innovator and entrepreneur in the province’s agriculture industry, who passed away on Wednesday, April 18, at the age of 88. I wish to offer condolences to Mr. Gill’s family and friends, and his daughter, Janice Gill, a manager in the Agriculture and Lands Branch of Fisheries and Land Resources.

Mr. Speaker, on Saturday evening I was pleased to attend Sport Newfoundland and Labrador’s 11th annual Stars and Legends Gala. I rise today to recognize the award winners and Hall of Fame inductees.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

Mr. Speaker, last Friday I had the pleasure of attending the Central Regional meeting of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador in Grand Falls-Windsor to announce $567,000 to support the Welcoming Communities–WelcomeNL Initiative, a partnership with MNL.

Today, the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable Tom Osborne, Minister Responsible for the Office of the Chief Information Officer, advanced a key commitment in The Way Forward by releasing a five-year plan to enhance government services for residents by making services “digital-by-design.”

Today, the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, revealed the next phase of The Way Forward: A Vision for Sustainability and Growth in Newfoundland and Labrador. This new phase of actions focuses on improving services and outcomes for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, while building on prior work to deliver a stronger economic foundation, and achieve a more efficient public sector.

Fisheries and Land Resources

Residents are reminded to be vigilant when using fire given drier-than-usual spring conditions in some parts of the province in 2018. Extreme caution is advised relating to spring burning and use of vehicles or forestry equipment near forest land.
