The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced the appointment of Heather Jacobs, QC, as Deputy Minister (Acting) of the Department of Justice and Public Safety and also as Deputy Attorney General (Acting), effective immediately.

Transportation and Works

The Provincial Government has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for ferry services across the Strait of Belle Isle that will improve the way passengers, freight and vehicles are transported within Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, will bring greetings at the launch of Innovation Week 2018 on Monday, May 14. The event will take place at the Bruneau Innovation Centre, Memorial University Campus, St. John's, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Health and Community Services

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety, and the Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services, will join the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to officially launch National Police Week with a cake-cutting ceremony. The event takes place Monday, May 14, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the Elaine Dobbin Centre for Autism, 70 Clinch Crescent, St. John's.

Fisheries and Land Resources

White-nose syndrome has been confirmed in three Little Brown Myotis (bats) in western Newfoundland. This bat disease has decimated hibernating bats throughout the Maritime provinces and the northeastern United States.

The Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, will deliver the keynote address at the Extraordinary Women’s Making Your Mark luncheon today (Friday, May 11). The luncheon is being held at Comfort Inn Airport, 106 Airport Road, St. John’s, beginning at 12:30 p.m.

The Provincial Government is continuing to support mineral exploration and growth in the mining industry through Budget 2018 with $1.7 million in support for the Mineral Incentive Program which includes the Junior Exploration Assistance and the Prospectors Assistance Programs.

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and Gudie Hutchings, Member of Parliament for Long Range Mountains, on behalf of the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agrifood, announced details of programming under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership today to support growth in the agriculture and agrifoods sector in Newfoundland and Labrador.

A new Restaurant Bundle Checklist will simplify the regulatory process for anyone interested in opening a new restaurant in St. John’s. Offered through BizPaL, the list includes required inspections, permits and licences necessary at different stages of the business process, as well as potential wait times and costs.

The Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, will be announcing government’s investment in the Mineral Incentive Program in St. John’s tomorrow (Thursday, May 10), at 12:00 p.m. in the Matty Mitchell Prospectors Resource Room on the main floor of the Natural Resources Building, 50 Elizabeth Avenue.

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General, will be joined by Diana Gibbons, Assistant Superintendent, Her Majesty's Penitentiary, for the opening of the Wellness Garden at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary tomorrow (Thursday, May 10). Members of the media are invited to join Minister Parsons for a tour of the woodworking shop at 12:30 p.m. followed by the opening of the garden at 1:00 p.m.

Municipal Affairs and Environment

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, was joined by Tony Keats, President of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, and Brian Peckford, President of Professional Municipal Administrators, to sign a proclamation to recognize today, May 9, as Municipal Awareness Day in Newfoundland and Labrador. Municipal Awareness Day is an opportunity to celebrate the ongoing work by the Provincial Government, administrators and municipalities to support strong local governance, access to emergency services, and quality services and infrastructure.
