Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, today issued a second call for proposals to enhance immigrant settlement and integration services throughout the province.

Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, today announced significant funding to encourage, develop and support innovation in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Executive Council

The Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador will hold an event to recognize National Seal Product Day tomorrow (Thursday, May 17) in the Confederation Building, East Block lobby. The event is being hosted by the Provincial Government, and is also supported by the Government of Nunavut, as well as a variety of industry sponsors.

Service NL

In an effort to help strengthen the taxi industry in Newfoundland and Labrador, the Provincial Government is introducing more stringent requirements for taxi drivers and vehicles. The changes, which will come into effect on July 1, 2018, focus on skilled drivers, experience in driving in Newfoundland and Labrador road conditions, driving history, passenger safety and safer vehicles.

Children, Seniors and Social Development

Over 120 of the province’s top athletes were recognized today by the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, at the 14th annual Premier’s Athletic Awards in St. John’s.

Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, will bring greetings at the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Technology Industries (NATI) Knowledge Summit tomorrow (Wednesday, May 16). The event will take place at the Sheraton Newfoundland Hotel, 115 Cavendish Square, St. John's, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Justice and Public Safety

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety, will attend the 20th Annual International Peace Officers’ Memorial Day Service. The service takes place tomorrow (Wednesday, May 16) at the Seventh Day Adventist Church located at 30 Aldershot Street, St. John's, at 11:00 a.m.

Service NL

The Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Service NL, will announce road and passenger safety enhancements for the taxi industry tomorrow (Wednesday, May 16). The event will take place at 9:30 a.m. at the Vital Statistics Division boardroom located in the Motor Registration Division Building, 149 Smallwood Drive, Mount Pearl.

Education and Early Childhood Development

Bernard Davis, Parliamentary Secretary for Service NL, will bring greetings to the Canadian Association of Principals Conference in St. John’s tomorrow (Wednesday, May 16). The conference takes place at the Delta Hotel, 120 New Gower Street, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Health and Community Services

May 7 to 13 was Mental Health Week. This year’s theme was #GetLoud about what mental health really is. We joined schools, businesses, community groups, organizations, municipal governments and people in communities throughout our province to get loud!

Mr. Speaker, I rise in this Honourable House to highlight the field work being undertaken by the Geological Survey this summer.

Children, Seniors and Social Development

New legislation to promote the safety and well-being of children and youth will begin second reading in the House of Assembly today. The new Children, Youth and Families Act will replace the Children and Youth Care and Protection Act. The new act builds on the principles of the previous act and is child and youth-centred, family-focused and culturally responsive.

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced an investment of $750,000 to help support the development and growth of Quorum Information Systems. Premier Ball was joined at the announcement by the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation; Mark Browne, Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation; and Maury Marks, President and CEO of Quorum.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, wishes Muslim Newfoundlanders and Labradorians a peaceful and fulfilling month of Ramadan, which begins this week.

Finance

The Honourable Tom Osborne, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board, is acknowledging the House of Assembly’s passing of Budget 2018 – Building for Our Future. Budget 2018 positions Newfoundland and Labrador to return to surplus in 2022-23 while supporting the delivery of programs and services, and creating new business and employment opportunities.

The Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, will speak at the College of the North Atlantic Innovation at Work! Event in St. John’s tomorrow (Tuesday, May 15). The event will take place at the College of the North Atlantic, Prince Philip Drive Campus, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
