Statement from Premier Sandy Silver on the passing of The Duke of Edinburgh

Premier Sandy Silver has issued the following statement:

“It is with deep sadness that I learned today of the passing of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. 

Prince Philip devoted his life to others. He served in the Royal Navy for 13 years, starting in 1939 as a Cadet. He continued to champion personal achievement and founded the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

This global program encourages young people to pursue worthwhile activities in the name of service to their communities in hopes of inspiring others to reach for their full potential.

Commissioner Angélique Bernard has issued the following statement:

“On behalf of all Yukoners, I would like to offer our deepest sympathy to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the passing of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Yukon fondly remembers his late Royal Highness’s Prince Philip’s visits to the territory, on his own in 1954 and then in 1959 in the company of the Queen.

April 7, 2021: COVID-19 update

The Government of Yukon has the following updates for the Yukon public on measures being taken in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

COVID-19 cases and recoveries

As of Tuesday, April 6, the COVID-19 case count for Yukon is 74. Seventy-three people have recovered, one person has died and there are no active cases. We have tested 6,933 people.

Vaccination rollout progress

As of the end of the day Monday, April 5, there were 37,193 doses of the Moderna vaccine administered in Yukon. This number includes 23,954 first doses and 13,239 second doses.

March 31, 2021: An out of territory resident has tested positive for COVID-19

Yukon Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Brendan Hanley confirmed one new case of COVID-19 today, bringing the territory’s total to 74 cases.

This new case is in a Yukon resident who acquired the infection out of territory, was tested out of the territory and will remain out of territory until they are non-infectious.

While this increases Yukon’s case count, it does not increase the number of cases active in the territory.

Anyone who is experiencing any of the following symptoms is asked to self-isolate and arrange for testing immediately: 

Grades 10 to 12 students in Whitehorse to return to full-time, in-person classes

Grades 10 to 12 students at F.H. Collins, Vanier Catholic and Porter Creek secondary schools will be able to return to full-time, in-person classes on April 19, 2021.

Two planning days have been scheduled to support school staff in adjusting their course plans for the remainder of the school year. Grades 10 to 12 students will not attend in-class school during these two days and will be expected to be learning from home on work assigned by their teachers. Planning days are scheduled for:

First cases of COVID-19 variants of concern identified in Yukon

Yukon’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Brendan Hanley has confirmed two new cases of COVID-19 today, including Yukon’s first case of a variant of concern.  The second case is not considered a Yukon case.

COVID-19 tests can now be booked online

Yukoners can now book COVID-19 tests online through the recently launched online booking tool. People who have a valid health-care card can now book an appointment online if they are experiencing any COVID-19 like symptoms and require testing.

The online booking tool asks a series of questions, taking users through several steps to help determine what type of test is most suitable based on their needs. The new tool will then confirm a user’s symptoms and the reason for a COVID-19 test before confirming an appointment.

Potential COVID-19 exposure at Silvertip mine, Northern BC

Yukon public health officials have been informed of cases of COVID-19 transmitted at Coeur Mining’s Silvertip mine in Northern BC.

All Yukon and Lower Post workers who were at the mine since this time are being individually notified either by the company, their employer or by Yukon Communicable Disease Control.

Premier Sandy Silver has announced that Yukon's general election will be held April 12, 2021.

Premier Silver asked the Commissioner of Yukon Angélique Bernard to dissolve the 34th legislative assembly effective today and direct the issuance of the writs of election as specified in the Elections Act.

The Government of Yukon would like to remind Yukoners that the territory remains on permanent year-round time. Yukoners will not "spring forward" on March 14 when other parts of Canada move to Daylight Saving Time.

Last year, Yukoners were asked for their input on whether to keep the twice-annual time change or observe a single time permanently. The results of the public engagement were clear: Yukon should stop seasonal time changes.

From March to November, Yukon is on the same time as most of British Columbia, and one hour behind Alberta and the Northwest Territories.

Yukon featured in first episode of Promising Practices podcast

Canada’s Premiers have launched a podcast about promising practices in mental health and substance use. Led by Yukon Premier Sandy Silver and Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, the initiative is called Promising Practices. Each episode features innovations in rural, remote and northern communities from across the country.

Government of Yukon withdraws lands from mineral staking in Dawson planning region

The Government of Yukon has withdrawn from mineral staking certain lands with high conservation value in the Dawson planning region.

These withdrawals are temporary and may be changed after a full draft plan is submitted by the Dawson Regional Land Use Planning Commission, after which time the whole picture of the Dawson planning region can be reviewed.

These lands were identified by the Dawson Regional Land Use Planning Commission and the interim withdrawals will help protect wildlife, wetlands and other key areas within the planning region during the planning process.

Public Airports Act Regulation set to come into force April 1, 2021

Today, the Government of Yukon signed the Public Airports Act Regulation. The regulation outlines how public airports throughout the territory are managed. It also includes details about land management and use, future development, land leases, licences and permits, and fees.

The new regulation was reviewed by the Yukon Aviation Advisory Committee, who provided valuable feedback along with First Nations governments and municipalities. Their input helped create a regulation that is effective, meaningful and consistent in its application.

Statement from Yukon’s Chief Medical Officer of Health advising Yukoners against all non-essential travel

“With March break quickly approaching, I am reminding Yukoners that non-essential travel out of territory is not recommended. Out of an abundance of caution, I continue to recommend against all non-essential travel at this time.

Construction contract awarded for Old Crow Health and Wellness centre, and 10-plex housing unit

The Government of Yukon has awarded a value-driven contract for $44,884,488.00 to local Whitehorse company KetzaTSL Construction Ltd. to build a new health and wellness centre and 10-plex in Old Crow.

Value-driven procurements look at a number of elements beyond price to ensure there is additional value for the community and the territory. In this case, the project team awarded points for the overall proposal including the schedule, training plans, sub-contracting plans, northern experience and First Nations participation.
