Election Workers Needed for Upcoming By-Elections

Elections Newfoundland and Labrador is seeking applications for polling station workers for the upcoming provincial by-elections in Humber East and Trinity-Bay de Verde. Workers are needed for advance polls on November 18, 2014 and for ordinary polls on November 25, 2014.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced that the Provincial Government is moving forward with the planning of a new court complex for St. John’s to serve the Northeast Avalon Peninsula. A Request for Proposals for companies interested in completing the initial planning stage of the project will be issued in the coming weeks. Premier Davis was joined at the announcement by the Honourable Judy Manning, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General.

O’Donnell’s Bridge Set for Replacement in 2015

A new bridge in O’Donnell’s will be open to traffic by fall 2015 with a $2.9 million investment by the Provincial Government. This investment builds on a series of bridge improvement and replacement projects that have taken place throughout the province this year totalling close to $30 million.

Minister Responds to Auditor General’s Release of Report on Audited Financial Statements

The Auditor General today released his 2014 Report on the Audit of the Financial Statements for the Province for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2014. The financial statements released by the Provincial Government received an unqualified audit opinion from the Auditor General and confirmed that the deficit for the 2013-14 fiscal year was $388.6 million, a decrease of $175.2 million from the original forecasted deficit of $563.8 million.

Auditor General raises concerns about the sustainability of Provincial deficit

In his commentary on the consolidated summary financial statements of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, delivered to the Speaker of the House of Assembly today in St. John’s, Auditor General Terry Paddon highlights that the Provincial deficit of $389 million for the year ended March 31, 2014 has doubled from the prior year. This means that expenses have grown beyond the amount of revenue available to pay for those expenses.
