Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

Mr. Speaker, I was pleased to join representatives of the arts community today to recognize an important piece of legislation that will be debated in this Honourable House. The Status of the Artist Act recognizes the important role artists play in contributing to the cultural, social, and economic well-being of the province.

Transportation and Works

Today, the Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Transportation and Works, unveiled a new addition to the department’s provincial snow clearing fleet that will improve how the province clears snow from the Trans-Canada Highway on the Avalon Peninsula this winter.

Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

In recognition of the important role artists play in contributing to the cultural, social, and economic well-being of the province, today a new Status of the Artist Act will go to second reading in the House of Assembly. The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, joined stakeholders at the Arts and Culture Centre in St. John’s to celebrate the important milestone.

Regular polling for the Mount Pearl North by-election is taking place today. The polls are open from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Elections Newfoundland and Labrador would like to notify electors in the district of Mount Pearl North that the by-election will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, November 21, 2017. The polls will be open from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, will outline the Provincial Government’s recognition and support for professional artists tomorrow (Tuesday, November 21) as outlined in the Status of the Artist Act to be debated in the House of Assembly. The event takes place at the St. John’s Arts and Culture Centre, 2nd Floor Concourse, 95 Allandale Road, St. John’s, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Justice and Public Safety

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Government House Leader, will participate in a panel discussion at the release of The Democracy Cookbook: Recipes to Renew Governance in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Executive Council

The Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, will bring greetings at the 10th annual Provincial Indigenous Women’s Conference tomorrow (Tuesday, November 21). The event will take place at the Alt Hotel, 125 Water Street, St. John's, at 9:30 a.m.

Health and Community Services

The Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services, will speak at the YWCA St. John’s Celebrating Women’s Leadership Series tonight (Monday, November 20).

Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to rise in this Honourable House today to congratulate Mothers Against Drunk Driving on the 30th anniversary of their Project Red Ribbon Campaign.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

Mr. Speaker, the Workforce Innovation Centre at College of the North Atlantic’s Corner Brook campus supports innovative research and projects to help Newfoundlanders and Labradorians gain and maintain sustainable employment. Four inaugural projects have now been selected to share more than $1.7 million in funding.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador today announced that it will be proceeding with a public inquiry into the Muskrat Falls Project.

Fisheries and Land Resources

The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources, joined His Worship Joedy Wall, Mayor of Pouch Cove, today to sign a new Municipal Habitat Stewardship Agreement that will help protect valuable wetland and coastal habitats located in and around the community.

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will make a significant announcement today, regarding the Muskrat Fall Project.

Office of the Child and Youth Advocate

Today the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate marks the UN International Day of the Child which is celebrated in Canada on November 20. Every child and youth in Canada has fundamental rights which are identified in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Canadian government, with support from all jurisdictions, ratified this human rights treaty in 1991.
