Office of the Child and Youth Advocate

The Office of the Child and Youth Advocate has released the 2016 Status Report on Recommendations today entitled Not There Yet. This report is issued annually. It reports progress and status of the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate and Child Death Review Committee recommendations to December 2016.

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, will join the Honourable Seamus O’Regan, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Member of Parliament for St. John’s South - Mount Pearl, on behalf of the Honourable Melanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, to announce funding for Newfoundland and Labrador’s Arts and Culture Centres tomorrow (Thursday, December 21). The event takes place at the St. John’s Arts and Culture Centre, 2nd Floor Concourse, 95 Allandale Road, St. John’s, beginning at 1:00 p.m.

The Provincial Government today released its six-month update of Towards Recovery: The Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador. After six months, 51 of the 54 recommendations are completed or in-progress.

The consultations process was held between August and November with the purpose of seeking public input to help inform the development of a potential model of regional government and/or sharing of services for the province.

Justice and Public Safety

The Honourable Justice Richard D. LeBlanc, Commissioner for the Inquiry Respecting the Muskrat Falls Project Order, has been actively laying the foundation for the operation of the Commission. He is working to establish a suitable organization and to hire staff and others to support the work of the inquiry. To date, a Chief Administrative Officer and other administrative staff have been appointed. By way of a news release dated November 24, 2017, it was announced that Kate O’Brien had been appointed co-counsel for the inquiry.

The Municipal Assessment Agency is pleased to announce the result of the recent election for six municipal representatives to its Board of Directors. The voting was conducted by a mail/fax ballot following the municipal elections.
