How does your community garden grow? For 97 community, church, seniors, children and youth groups, municipalities, local service districts and schools, it’s with help from the Provincial Government’s new Community Garden Support Program.

Twelve communities in Newfoundland and Labrador have received FireSmart Canada grants to fund local projects to help reduce the risk of wildfire damage to homes and communities. This is the highest number of grants ever awarded in the province under this program, thanks in part to promotional assistance from the Fire, Emergency and Corporate Services Branch of the Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment.

A contract has been awarded for the design of a new six-bed mental health unit at the Labrador Health Centre in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

Reports of a polar bear have been confirmed on Green Island, approximately one kilometre from the community of Cook’s Harbour on the Northern Peninsula. Conservation officers are monitoring the situation.

The event will begin at 3:30 p.m. and parking will be available in the front of the building.

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, will participate in the East Coast Trail Association’s 2019 Trail Raiser fundraising hike tomorrow (Saturday, June 8). The event will take place at the conclusion of hike two, at the Bay Bulls Regional Lifestyle Centre, 48A Cemetery Lane West, Bay Bulls, at approximately 1:30 p.m.

The Department of Fisheries and Land Resources is partnering with hunting and fishing associations and other organizations­­­ throughout the province this summer to deliver a series of hunting and angling skills workshops to youth ages 12-17.

Office of the Child and Youth Advocate

Child and Youth Advocate Jackie Lake Kavanagh is delighted to announce the winners of her office’s poster contest. The contest asked young people in the province to design a poster about what the right to education means to them. The Right to Education is one of many fundamental rights identified in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
