Nurse practitioner to join Carmacks and Old Crow health care team

A new nurse practitioner is joining the health care team providing services to the communities of Carmacks and Old Crow.

The nurse practitioner will supplement the existing nursing and visiting physician services at both community health centres. They will spend alternate weeks in each community, providing services from Monday through Thursday and will begin work in Old Crow on September 13, 2021.

The acting Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Catherine Elliott confirms one new death from COVID-19 in the Yukon. The death occurred today in Whitehorse General Hospital. None of the people who have died in the Yukon were fully vaccinated.

Eight individuals have been diagnosed with COVID-19 between noon on Friday, September 3 and noon on Wednesday, September 8. The number of active cases is currently at 20.  

One COVID-19 case confirmed at Porter Creek Secondary School

The Yukon’s acting Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Catherine Elliot has confirmed a positive COVID-19 case at Porter Creek Secondary School. Dr. Elliot has directed students in four Grade 9 and 10 classes at the school to self monitor or self isolate depending on their vaccination status, and family members of the affected classes were notified Tuesday evening.

Yukon Communicable Disease Control (YCDC) is working closely with the school to perform contact tracing and ensure all necessary measures are in place to protect students and staff.

Vera Brown receives Council of the Federation Literacy Award

Champagne and Aishihik First Nations Elder Vera Brown is this year’s recipient of the Yukon’s Council of the Federation Literacy Award, which celebrates exceptional achievement, innovative practice and excellence in adult literacy. Premier Sandy Silver presented the award to Vera today, on International Literacy Day, at a small ceremony with her family, friends and colleagues. This award recognizes the contributions of Vera Brown in Southern Tutchone language learning and preservation.

COVID-19 proof of vaccination credential service available for Yukoners

An online service to provide a proof of vaccination credential is now available to Yukoners. The credential is a secure, government-issued proof of your COVID-19 vaccination status.

Through the new online service, Yukoners have the option to receive a digital copy or print a paper copy of their vaccination credential, which contains features to ensure the document is authentic and verified. The credential is more secure than the wallet-sized vaccination card Yukoners received when they were administered their COVID-19 vaccines.

Four youth in the Yukon are receiving the Outstanding Youth Achievement Award in recognition for their remarkable service and contribution to their communities. The award recognizes Yukon youth who are involved in their communities in constructive and positive ways such as volunteering, fundraising, helping seniors and Elders and being a positive role model for others. Youth between the ages of 15 and 20 can be nominated for an Outstanding Youth Achievement Award, which are accepted after January 1 each year.

The acting Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Catherine Elliott has reported one new case of COVID-19 between noon on Wednesday, September 1 and noon on Friday, September 3. The number of active cases is currently at 22.  

Total number of confirmed Yukon cases since March 22, 2020: 694; 637 cases since June 1, including out of territory residents diagnosed in the Yukon and probable cases. Out of territory individuals who are diagnosed in the Yukon are counted in the active count but not in the Yukon total case count as they are counted in their home jurisdiction.

The acting Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Catherine Elliott has reported three new cases of COVID-19 between noon Monday, August 30, to noon Tuesday, August 31. There are two new cases being reported between noon Tuesday, August 31, to noon today. The number of active cases is currently at 24.

The Yukon’s acting Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Catherine Elliott has declared a COVID-19 outbreak in the Copper Ridge Place long-term care home following a positive diagnosis in a staff member. This case is linked to the case announced Monday in a resident transferred from Whitehorse General Hospital last week. The staff member was working in the same house.

The acting Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Catherine Elliott has reported five new cases of COVID-19 from noon Friday, August 27, to noon today. The number of active cases is currently at 21.

First COVID-19 case reported in a Yukon long-term care facility

On Sunday, August 29, a resident who transferred to Copper Ridge Place from the Whitehorse General Hospital tested positive for COVID-19. The person is in isolation and is otherwise in good health. Residents and staff in the same unit are being monitored and testing is being conducted as required. To date, all other tests have come back negative. Investigation into the infection and contact tracing are continuing.

There are no new cases being reported from noon Thursday, August 26, to noon today. The number of active cases is currently at 27.  

Work continues on the Yukon’s first supervised consumption site

The supervised consumption site is a life-saving health service that will provide a safe and hygienic environment for people to use drugs under the supervision of qualified medical staff. 

The facility was originally scheduled to open on August 31 but has been briefly postponed to account for renovations, staff training and to finalize details.

CSSC Mercier French First Language Secondary School and Community Centre celebrated for innovative leaning

The Government of Yukon and the Commission scolaire francophone du Yukon (CSFY) gathered today to celebrate the new French First Language Secondary School Community Centre, Centre scolaire secondaire communautaire Paul-Émile- Mercier (CSSC Mercier).

School staff and students joined dignitaries to honour the five-year collaboration, which made it possible for French First Language secondary students in Whitehorse to continue learning their language in an innovative and flexible learning space that also serves as a community centre.
