Premier Sandy Silver has issued the following statement:

COVID-19 outbreak declared in Grade 4 class at Johnson Elementary School in Watson Lake

The Yukon’s acting Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Catherine Elliott has declared a COVID-19 outbreak in the Grade 4 class at Johnson Elementary School in Watson Lake. At this time, three cases are linked to this outbreak. These cases have no known exposure sources other than the Grade 4 classroom. It is most likely that these cases caught COVID-19 within their class cohort and there is no indication of spread in the school beyond this class.

The acting Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Catherine Elliott reports 12 new cases of COVID-19 from noon Friday, September 17, to noon Monday, September 20. The number of active cases is currently 30.  

Total number of confirmed Yukon cases since March 22, 2020: 725; 678 cases since June 1, including out of territory residents diagnosed in the Yukon and probable cases. Since March 22, 2020, 691 people have recovered.

List of presumed cancers for firefighters to be included in proposed Workers’ Safety and Compensation Act

This fall, the Government of Yukon will table the most progressive Workers’ Compensation Bill in the country.

The legislation will include the broadest array of presumptive cancers in the country to protect full- and part-time and volunteer Yukon firefighters who, through their valiant work, are often placed at higher risk of illness. This list will also include thyroid and pancreatic cancer, which makes it the most comprehensive coverage in the country.

The acting Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Catherine Elliott reports four new cases of COVID-19 from noon Wednesday, September 15, to noon Friday, September 17.  The number of active cases is currently at 25.  

Total number of confirmed Yukon cases since March 22, 2020: 716; 666 cases since June 1, including out of territory residents diagnosed in the Yukon and probable cases. Since March 22, 2020, 686 people have recovered.

Third doses of COVID-19 vaccine to be available for a select group of immunocompromised Yukoners

Beginning Monday, September 20, Yukoners who qualify for a third dose of a COVID-19 immunization can make an appointment online through the CanImmunize page on Yukon.ca. Yukoners in rural communities can call their local health centre to find out when the next immunization clinic will be held.

In collaboration with Yukon First Nations, the Government of Yukon is developing new mining legislation that will improve the management of the Yukon’s mineral resources in a way that respects First Nations’ relationships with the land and supports a modern and sustainable mining industry. The new legislation will work to improve the territory’s regulatory system, strengthen the Yukon’s economy, protect the environment and support the modern day needs of the Yukon.

State of Emergency lifted for Southern Lakes, Lake Laberge

The Government of Yukon is lifting the State of Emergency previously issued under the Civil Emergency Measures Act in response to flooding in the Southern Lakes region, including Lake Laberge.

This State of Emergency was declared on July 9, 2021, giving the Yukon government the ability to provide effective and timely response to residents impacted by flooding in the territory. Water levels have continued to decline since August 17 and the flood response is now entering the recovery phase.

Joint release with the Government of Yukon, Da Daghay Development Corporation (DDDC) and the City of Whitehorse.

Today, the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council (TKC), Da Daghay Development Corporation (DDDC), along with the Government of Yukon and the City of Whitehorse, announced the opening of Phase 2 of the River Bend development in Whistle Bend. The second phase of the affordable housing development project consists of two buildings that will provide an additional 28 homes for Yukoners.

Leadership changes to Government of Yukon departments

Premier Sandy Silver has made changes to leadership positions in the Department of Tourism and Culture, French Language Services Directorate and the Women’s Directorate.

Justin Ferbey will be acting Deputy Minister for the Department of Tourism and Culture, along with his existing roles as Deputy Minister with the Department of Economic Development and President of the Yukon Development Corporation.

The acting Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Catherine Elliott reports five new cases of COVID-19 from noon, Wednesday, September 8 to noon, Friday, September 10. The number of active cases is currently at 20.  

Total number of confirmed Yukon cases since March 22, 2020: 701; 650 cases since June 1, including out of territory residents diagnosed in the Yukon and probable cases. Out of territory individuals who are diagnosed in the Yukon are counted in the active count but not in the Yukon total case count as they are counted in their home jurisdiction.
