Sheep hunting closure in Game Management Subzone 5–17 to conserve sheep in southwest Yukon starting August 1, 2024

In efforts to support sheep population recovery, the Government of Yukon has issued a sheep hunting closure for Game Management Subzone 5 – 17, representing the Donjek Sheep Management Unit. The closure is in effect from August 1, 2024, until October 31, 2026. While in effect, all licensed hunters are prohibited from harvesting sheep in this area.

Nine Yukon artists to be featured on new Welcome to the Yukon signs

The Government of Yukon is updating the welcome signs at all nine key points of entry to the territory with new designs featuring local artists’ work. Each sign will reflect the Yukon’s inspiring landscape, vibrant culture and creativity.

The Yukon welcome signs are an important part of a Yukon travel experience and a source of pride for Yukoners. These signs are regularly photographed and shared on social media to a large international audience. Improving these signs will help support businesses, communities, and visitor experiences across the territory.

Government of Yukon shares updated wildfire outlook

The Government of Yukon provided an update on the wildfire weather outlook at a briefing on June 13. In summary:

For the past month, the Yukon has had mixed weather. Conditions are dry through central Yukon (from Destruction Bay through Carmacks, Faro and Ross River). The rest of the territory, in the north and the south, is not very dry due to last fall’s rain and winter snowpack. This means the wildfires so far this year are not burning as deeply or intensely as last year’s wildfires.

The Government of Yukon has signed onto the Aullaviat/Anguniarvik Traditional Conservation Area Agreement together with the Government of Canada and Inuvialuit Parties to ensure the conservation and protection of Aullaviat/Anguniarvik, the Eastern North Slope of the Yukon in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region.

Government of Yukon announces extended hours for Whitehorse Walk-in Clinic

The Government of Yukon is extending the operating hours of the Whitehorse Walk-in Clinic to better serve the community. Starting on Monday, June 17, the clinic will now be open:

  • Monday to Wednesday: 9 am to 12 pm and 1 pm to 5:30 pm
  • Thursday and Friday: 9 am to 12 pm and 1 pm to 4 pm

Government of Yukon releases flood maps for Southern Lakes area and Carmacks, seeks feedback on Teslin maps

Today, the Government of Yukon has released completed flood hazard maps for communities in the Southern Lakes area and Carmacks. These maps provide critical flood information to help the public and all levels of government better adapt to climate change, reduce flood risk and make informed decisions. They represent the first in a series planned for all 14 flood-prone communities, as committed to in the Our Clean Future climate strategy. Developed through detailed surveying and modelling, these maps show how different flooding scenarios could impact surrounding areas.

Community engagement begins for Ch'ëdähdëk (Forty Mile) Historic Site conservation plan

This is a joint release between the Government of Yukon and Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in.

In May of 2023, an ice jam formed at the confluence of the Fortymile and Yukon Rivers, resulting in extensive ice and water damage to the co-managed Ch'ëdähdëk (Forty Mile) Historic Site. Following damage assessments and stabilization of the remaining infrastructure, the Yukon and Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in governments have contracted ERA Architects to lead the development of a conservation plan to provide options and guidance for the future of the site.

Expansion of the wastewater collection system coming to Watson Lake

The Town of Watson Lake will benefit from a new sewage lift station thanks to a combined investment of more than $5.1 million from the federal and territorial governments.

Announced by Member of Parliament Dr. Brendan Hanley and Minister Richard Mostyn, the lift station will support new residential development, including 43 new Frances Avenue lots, which are currently under construction.

The Department of Education is committed to transparency, accountability and consistency in reporting data about the education system. The department publishes graduation rates each year in two reports, the How Are We Doing Report and the Yukon Wide Report

The How Are We Doing Report was designed collaboratively with Yukon First Nations and other partners. It provides detailed analyses, including rural–urban and self-identification breakdowns, and includes the Grade 12 Dogwood, Adult Dogwood and 6-Year graduation rates.

New multi-family building in Whitehorse moving to construction tender
