Natural Resources

The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency, focused on diversifying the economy when he spoke at the annual general meeting for the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture in Gander last night.

Executive Council

The National Governors Association (NGA) of the United States, the Council of the Federation (COF) of Canada and the National Conference of Governors (CONAGO) of Mexico today announced the inaugural Summit of North American Governors and Premiers will be held October 30-31 in Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States. The summit will be attended by United States and Mexican governors and Canadian premiers.

Health and Community Services

The new Labrador West Health Centre was officially opened today by the Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. The state-of-the-art facility represents an investment of approximately $90 million by the Provincial Government. Premier Davis was joined by the Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services; Nick McGrath, MHA for Labrador West; and Tony Wakeham, President and Chief Executive Officer, Labrador-Grenfell Health, for the announcement.

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

Coastal Building Products and Services Ltd. has been awarded a $567,000 contract to provide exterior renovations on two social housing buildings on Empire Avenue and Hoyles Avenue in St. John’s.

Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

The Stephenville Cultural Destination Development Committee is working to market the town as a military cultural destination with support from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Provincial Government is committing $63,000 to the initiative which includes producing a marketing plan for the town.

The event begins at 8:00 p.m. at the Hotel Gander.

Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

As of March 1, 2015, Conception Bay South, Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador City and Paradise will have the authority to ticket for property-related municipal by-laws.

Seniors, Wellness and Social Development

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development, will be in Corner Brook tomorrow (Wednesday, February 4) to participate in the TeamNL Canada Games West Coast athletes' rally. The event takes place at the Corner Brook Civic Centre Annex, beginning at 6:00 p.m.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will take part in the official opening of the Labrador West Health Centre, 1700 Nichols-Adam Highway, Labrador City, tomorrow (Wednesday, February 4) at 1:30 p.m.

Transportation and Works

The Department of Transportation and Works is advising motorists that the east bound lanes of the Trans Canada Highway at the Holyrood Access Road are temporarily closed due to a blown-over transport truck which is blocking traffic. Traffic is being detoured to the off and on ramps.

Justice and Public Safety

As a follow-up to the Public Advisory issued yesterday (Monday, February 2) regarding anticipated high water levels due to the low pressure system currently making its way through the province, Environment Canada has now issued a storm surge warning for Channel-Port aux Basques and vicinity.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced the member appointments to the Premier's Youth Advisory Committee, a unique forum which will advise government on youth-related programs and policies. Twenty-three young people from varied backgrounds, experiences and regional perspectives will form the committee.

Justice and Public Safety

Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL) encourages residents to be cautious around coastlines and waterways over the coming days as there is potential for elevated water levels due to large waves and pounding surf associated with a weather system forecast to affect the province tomorrow (Tuesday, February 3).

Kevin Pollard, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, will attend the Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Annual General Meeting tomorrow (Tuesday, February 3). The event begins at 11:00 a.m. at the Carnell Building, 13 Pippy Place, St. John’s.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

The Provincial Government continues to help communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador enhance vital marine infrastructure through its Special Assistance Grants program. The program, which supports upgrades and maintenance to wharves, slipways, and community stages, helped 98 organizations pursue projects over the past year.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will be the keynote speaker at the Labrador West Chamber of Commerce tomorrow (Tuesday, February 3) at 6:30 p.m. Premier Davis will also address the Labrador West Rotary on Wednesday, February 4, at 12:00 p.m.

February is Heart Month in Newfoundland and Labrador and the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development, and the Honourable Steve Kent, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Community Services, have joined with the Newfoundland and Labrador Heart and Stroke Foundation to highlight the important role that active, healthy living plays in both the prevention and management of heart disease.

The Provincial Government is recognizing February 1-7 as Eating Disorder Awareness Week. The provincial theme for 2015 is Prevention...We CAN Make It Happen. The theme emphasizes prevention through education, understanding the signs and knowing where to seek help.
