The Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services, has announced the first statutory review of the Personal Health Information Act and has appointed a statutory review committee. The act establishes rules that custodians of personal health information must follow when collecting, using and disclosing individuals’ confidential personal health information.

Marine Harvest to Establish Operations in Newfoundland and Labrador

International aquaculture producer Marine Harvest has begun the process of establishing operations in Newfoundland and Labrador. The company has invested $15 million to purchase the assets of the Gray Aqua Group of Companies in Atlantic Canada, including seven farming licences in the province and the Hermitage processing plant.

New Geoscience Database Encourages Research and Exploration

Number of Serious Fish-Related Offences Significantly Increase in 2016

While the overall number of fish-related violations in 2016 was comparable to 2015, there was a significant increase in the more serious offences. Particularly concerning for the province’s Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Division is the dramatic increase in the types of offences which have the most detrimental impact on salmon populations. This summer, one file alone saw the seizure of 54 Atlantic salmon from an illegal net in Traverse Brook.

Funding for New Medical Equipment Announced for Labrador West
