Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, today announced an increase in the hourly wage for Job Trainers.

The Speaker of the House of Assembly, the Honourable Tom Osborne, advises that the House of Assembly Management Commission will hold its next meeting at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17.

Justice and Public Safety

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety, will participate in events recognizing police and peace officers as part of National Police Week. Today (Monday, May 15), the minister will join the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to officially launch National Police Week with a cake-cutting ceremony that will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Association for New Canadians, Strawberry Marsh Road, St. John's.

Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

The Governments of Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada recognize the value and importance of strong rural communities to economic health and prosperity, and to the creation of meaningful opportunities and good-paying jobs for the middle class. Together, the Provincial and Federal Governments are investing more than $2.1 million in four projects in communities in the Bonne Bay region.

The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, will announce additional funding for Job Trainers on Monday, May 15, 10:00 a.m., at Avalon Employment Inc., 62 Field Street (The Hub), St. John’s.

Transportation and Works

With the arrival of warmer temperatures, crews from maintenance depots across the province are now refocusing on summer road maintenance issues. Repair work has been taking place on numerous routes throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. Crews are addressing potholes, caused by recurring freezing and thawing throughout the winter and spring, as quickly as possible.

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will announce funding for a number of projects in the Bonne Bay region tomorrow (Saturday, May 13). The event is taking place at the Gros Morne Visitor Centre, Route 430, in Rocky Harbour at 2:30 p.m.

The Honourable Cathy Bennett, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board, will speak to the members of the Association of Chartered Professional Accountants of Newfoundland and Labrador on Monday, May 15. The event takes place at the Capital Hotel, 208 Kenmount Road, St. John’s, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Fisheries and Land Resources

The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources, will participate in Seal Day on the Hill events in Ottawa on Monday, May 15. Seal Day on the Hill is held each year on Parliament Hill to provide a forum for Canadian seal and fur industries and federal and provincial officials to showcase seal products and promote the seal industry.

Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

Due to late snowfall this winter, the Department of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation advises that significant amounts of snow remain in Lockston Path and Notre Dame Provincial Parks.

Municipal Affairs and Environment

Today, the Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, and the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, announced more than $3 million in joint federal-provincial funding for the replacement of the Corner Brook Main Street bridge.

Bernard Davis, Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Community Services, will speak at an Atlantic Innovation Fund announcement tomorrow (Friday, May 12). The event takes place at the Bruneau Centre for Research and Innovation, Memorial University, St. John’s, beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Education and Early Childhood Development

The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, will visit several schools and a child care centre on the Northern Peninsula tomorrow (Friday, May 12). Minister Kirby will be joined by the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation and MHA for St. Barbe - L'Anse aux Meadows.

Municipal Affairs and Environment

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, will be joined by the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities; the Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills and MHA for the District of Corner Brook; Gudie Hutchings, MP for the Long Range Mountains; and Charles Pender, Mayor of Corner Brook, for an important infrastructure announcement regarding the Corner Brook Main Street Bridge Replacement.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador today announced three new appointees to the Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation (NLC) Board of Directors. The appointments were recommended through the Independent Appointments Commission.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to congratulate the towns of Old Perlican and Flatrock, which have received $500 FireSmart Community Preparedness Day grants. The grants are provided through our province’s membership in Partners in Protection, a national organization dedicated to making communities safe from wildland fire.

Mr. Speaker, it gives me great pleasure to rise in this Honourable House today to recognize Barry Fitzgerald, Senior Manager of Corporate Safety, with the Department of Transportation and Works, who has been selected as a judge for this year’s Canada’s Safest Employers Awards.

Registration for the upcoming Becoming an Outdoors Woman workshop taking place at Killdevil Camp, Gros Morne National Park, is now open. The workshop will run from June 16 to 18, 2017.

Canada's federal, provincial and territorial (FPT) Ministers of Agriculture met yesterday to discuss the path forward to developing the next agricultural policy framework, which will help Canadian farmers and food processors grow their businesses. Ministers are committed to continued support to the agricultural sector and will reconvene in July to ensure work is on track to launch the next framework on April 1, 2018.
