Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

Through an investment of approximately $1.4 million in municipal capital works funding cost-shared with local communities, the Provincial Government is supporting key municipal infrastructure upgrades in the District of Port de Grave. The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, joined by Glenn Littlejohn, MHA for Port de Grave, made the announcement today.

Justice

The Honourable Felix Collins, Attorney General, will attend a ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I, today (Monday, August 4). The event begins at 8:15 p.m. at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist, 200 Military Road, St. John’s.

Transportation and Works

The Department of Transportation and Works advises that the Sir Ambrose Shea Lift Bridge remains temporarily closed with vehicular traffic detoured to Southeast Placentia Road.

Kevin Pollard, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health and Community Services, will announce health care investments in Springdale tomorrow (Tuesday, August 5).

Advanced Education and Skills: Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation

G.S. Hunt Ltd. has been awarded a $222,000 contract to provide roofing and interior renovations on eight social housing homes at Regatta Terrace in St. John’s.

Health and Community Services

The U.S. Memorial Health Centre in St. Lawrence will benefit from an investment of $52,000 for patient service equipment.

Office of the Chief Electoral Officer

A writ of election has been issued for the district of St. George’s - Stephenville East by Newfoundland and Labrador’s Chief Electoral Officer, Victor Powers. The by-election will take place on Tuesday, August 26, 2014.

The Provincial Government is committed to partnering with communities to strengthen infrastructure throughout rural Newfoundland and Labrador. Recognizing this, $1.3 million will fund a number of projects, cost-shared with communities throughout the District of Terra Nova. The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, made the announcement in the Town of Gambo today along with the Honourable Sandy Collins, Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services and MHA for Terra Nova.

Service NL

Service NL announced today that McCarthy’s Roofing Ltd., a supervisor and two workers have been charged with violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations. The charges resulted from an investigation by the Occupational Health and Safety Division and related to inspections that occurred in Corner Brook on May 16, 2014. The charges were laid on June 24, 2014.

The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador, was joined today by Calvin Peach, MHA for Bellevue, to announce over $260,000 in funding for a new pumper truck for the Town of Terrenceville.

Communities served by the Connaigre Peninsula Health Centre in Harbour Breton will benefit from an investment of $249,000 for health care infrastructure and medical equipment.

The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador, will be joined by Calvin Peach, MHA for Bellevue, to make a fire and safety related announcement at the fire hall in the community of Terrenceville today (Friday, August 1) at 10:00 am.

The Honourable Tom Marshall, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced the appointment of Leigh Puddester as Acting Deputy Minister of Service NL.

Environment and Conservation

The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

Innovation, Business and Rural Development

The Placentia Rowing Club has received $100,000 from the Provincial Government to assist with the completion of enhancements to the town’s rowing and regatta site. The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development, was joined by the Honourable Felix Collins, Attorney General and MHA for Placentia - St. Mary’s, and made the announcement while touring the refurbished grounds today in Placentia.

The event will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the fire hall.

The Honourable David Brazil, Minister of Service NL and Minister Responsible for the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission, today announced appointments to the commission’s Board of Directors. Three new members have been appointed and four members have been re-appointed to continue equal representation on behalf of the public, employers, and workers.

Innovation, Business and Rural Development

To strengthen the Stephenville Airport Corporation’s ability to attract new business, the Provincial Government and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) are providing a total of $99,000 to assist the corporation in its ability to implement a three-year strategic business plan.
