The Government of Yukon has released Forging Ahead, a framework outlining the Yukon’s ongoing response to the pandemic as it begins its transition from pandemic to endemic. The approach focuses on living with COVID-19 while managing and containing future cases, clusters and outbreaks within the territory. The purpose of this plan is to provide guidance as the Yukon moves forward and as Yukoners begin to adapt to living with the risk of COVID-19.
Coroners Act and regulations come into force
This is a joint release with the Yukon Coroner’s Service.
The new Coroners Act came into force today, providing modern legislation that will allow the Yukon Coroner’s Service to continue to serve Yukoners by performing timely and compassionate coroner investigations in the Yukon.

August 18, 2021: COVID-19 case count update
The acting Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Catherine Elliott is reporting nine new cases of COVID-19 from 12 p.m. Tuesday, August 17, to 12 p.m. today. The number of active cases is currently at 47. Dr. Catherine Elliott confirms that one out of territory resident and one Yukoner have been confirmed to have the Delta variant. The case investigations on these two cases are complete and their contacts are isolating. One person with the Delta variant is in hospital. There are no exposure events within the Yukon associated with these cases.
August 17, 2021: COVID-19 case count update
The Yukon’s acting Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Catherine Elliott is reporting 13 new cases of COVID-19 from 12 p.m. Friday, August 13, to 12 p.m. today. The number of active cases is currently at 40.
Total number of confirmed Yukon cases since March 22, 2020: 660; 600 cases since June 1, including out of territory residents diagnosed in the Yukon and probable cases. Out of territory individuals who are diagnosed in the Yukon are counted in the active count but not in the Yukon total case count as they are counted in their home jurisdiction.
Yukon firefighters deployed to British Columbia to support challenging wildfire response
The Government of Yukon has sent 40 wildland firefighters and four supervisory staff to support British Columbia’s ongoing wildfire response. The crews left the Yukon for Kamloops, B.C., on Monday, August 16, for a 19-day deployment.
By helping to respond to wildfires in B.C., Wildland Fire Management is balancing its responsibility to protect Yukon communities from wildland fire and flood risk with the opportunity to support the territory’s neighbours. B.C. has often provided wildfire response support to the Yukon.
The Government of Canada and the Government of Yukon announce extension of support for quality early learning and child care across the territory

The Government of Canada and the Government of Yukon have reached an agreement on an extension to the Canada–Yukon Early Learning and Child Care Agreement.

Out of territory individuals who are diagnosed in the Yukon are counted in the active count but not in the Yukon total case count as they are counted in their home jurisdiction.
Government of Canada invests over $3 million to support Canadians living and working in long-term care in the Yukon

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted long-standing challenges in Canada’s long-term care (LTC) facilities. Gaps have been exposed in infection prevention and control, staffing and infrastructure, with tragic effects on residents, their families and those working in these settings.
First annual Our Clean Future report highlights actions taken on climate change and energy in 2020
The first annual report on progress implementing the climate change, energy and green economy commitments found in Our Clean Future is now available. The 2020 annual report tracks progress over the calendar year and highlights a path to reach the territory’s 2030 climate change goals.
The report details the most recent data on the Yukon’s greenhouse gas emissions and renewable energy electricity generation and the progress towards key targets in Our Clean Future. It also includes additional information on the objectives of the strategy.

Statement from Minister Clarke on the latest US intent to re-evaluate oil and gas leasing in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
The Government of Yukon continues to work with its partners in Porcupine caribou management for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, which include the governments of Canada and the Northwest Territories, Inuvialuit, Gwich’in Tribal Council, Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation, Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in and First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun.

The Yukon’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Brendan Hanley is reporting nine new cases of COVID-19 from 12 p.m. Friday, August 6, to 12 p.m. today. The number of active cases is currently at 44.
Candidates sought for Yukon Climate Leadership Council
The Government of Yukon is seeking members to form the Yukon Climate Leadership Council.
The Yukon Climate Leadership Council is a working committee that will develop recommendations for how the Yukon can reach its 45 per cent greenhouse gas emission reduction target by 2030. Using Our Clean Future: A Yukon strategy for climate change, energy and a green economy as a framework, the council will develop plans to support the 45 per cent reduction target and submit a report of recommendations to the government by May 2022.
Statement from Premier Sandy Silver on the passing of Deputy Grand Chief Kristine McLeod
Premier of Yukon Sandy Silver has issued the following statement:
“It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the passing of Deputy Grand Chief of the Gwich’in Tribal Council Kristine McLeod.
“McLeod was recognized as a strong leader with a passion for education and the happiness of others. She focused on health, safety and building capacity within the Gwich’in Nation.
“McLeod worked tirelessly on behalf of the Gwich’in people throughout the North and she will be sorely missed across the Northwest Territories and the Yukon.
Statement from Minister Clarke regarding hunting in Yukon First Nations traditional territories
The Government of Yukon is aware Liard First Nation and the Ross River Dena Council have requested non-Kaska hunters refrain from hunting in their asserted traditional territory this fall. They have indicated this is due to concerns they have in relation to harvest pressures and concerns over COVID-19.
Yukon’s licensed hunters are guided by the Wildlife Act and the rules of general application always apply. Licensed hunters do not require permission to hunt on non-Settlement Lands in any traditional territory.
School bus routes ready for the 2021–22 school year
School bus routes for the 2021–22 school year have been finalized and bus schedules can be found on online.
Families have been notified by email of which bus route their child has been assigned. This email applies to all students in the household who have been registered for the school bus service.
