October 29, 2021: COVID-19 case update
The Yukon’s acting Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Catherine Elliott reports 20 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 from noon Wednesday, October 27, until noon Friday, October 29. The number of active cases is currently at 70.
Total number of confirmed cases in Yukon residents since March 2020: 921. People from out of the territory but who are diagnosed in the Yukon are counted in the active case count but not in the Yukon’s total case count as they are counted in their home jurisdiction. Since March 2020, 856 people have recovered. Ten people have died.

Government of Yukon expands safe supply program
The Government of Yukon is working to expand access to a medically prescribed safe supply of opioids to address the opioid crisis in the Yukon. Safe supply refers to the provision of a pharmaceutical drug supply of known quantity and quality, as a safer option for adults who use illegal drugs and are at high risk of overdosing. Safe supply is a physician-prescribed and pharmacy-dispensed program that will help Yukoners who use opioids access a safer supply of opioids.
COVID-19 booster doses to be available starting with Yukoners ages 50 and older
Following recommendation from the acting Yukon’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, COVID-19 boosters will be available to Yukoners ages 50 and older starting November 1. People are eligible for a booster when it has been at least six months since they completed their primary COVID-19 vaccine series.
2020–21 Public Accounts show responsible fiscal management through COVID-19 pandemic
Today, Premier and Minister of Finance Sandy Silver tabled the 2020–21 Public Accounts in the Legislative Assembly.
As forecast in the 2020–21 Main Estimates, the non-consolidated financial statements show a return to surplus for the 2020–21 fiscal year. The Public Accounts report that the annual surplus for 2020–21 was $19.3. million, an increase of $15.2 million from the $4.1 million surplus forecast at the start of the fiscal year. This surplus is based on total non-consolidated year-end revenues of $1.610 billion and expenses of $1.591 billion.

The Yukon’s acting Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Catherine Elliott reports 11 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, from noon Monday, October 25, until noon Wednesday, October 27. The number of active cases is currently at 69.
Total number of confirmed cases in Yukon residents since March 2020: 902. People from out of the territory but who are diagnosed in the Yukon are counted in the active case count but not in the Yukon total case count as they are counted in their home jurisdiction. Since March 2020, 845 people have recovered. Ten people have died.

Premier Sandy Silver has issued the following statement:
“Earlier this afternoon, RCMP received reports of an active shooter in Faro. The RCMP’s response was quick and decisive, with support from Emergency Medical Services volunteers on the ground in Faro and the Yukon’s Emergency Measures Organization.
“The RCMP have confirmed that the suspect has been arrested and there is no longer a public safety threat for the community of Faro. At this time we know there are multiple victims. The RCMP are actively investigating the incident to confirm additional details.

Government of Yukon seeking input for new clean energy legislation
The Government of Yukon is seeking public input on the development of a new clean energy legislation. The proposed Clean Energy Act and associated regulations would legislate the government’s greenhouse gas commitments, provide the regulatory tools needed to meet these commitments and ensure long-term climate change accountability through public reporting.

Individuals who are diagnosed in the Yukon are counted in the active case count but not in the Yukon total case count as they are counted in their home jurisdiction. October 20, 2021: COVID-19 case update
The Yukon’s acting Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Catherine Elliott has declared an outbreak in one unit at the Whistle Bend Place long-term care home following the identification of one case in the facility.
The current situation is contained and routine outbreak management procedures are in place, including screening and testing protocols.
Visitor access to the affected unit is restricted for a minimum of 28 days following exposure.
Work underway on new Whistle Bend elementary school
Work on the first new Whitehorse elementary school in more than two decades has started. Whitehorse-based Ketza Construction Corporation has started brush-clearing activities on the new Whistle Bend school site. Substantial site excavation and building construction will start in the spring.
The school will accommodate up to 425 students from kindergarten to Grade 7 and construction is expected to be completed during the 2023–24 school year.
