The Government of Yukon will be implementing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in the territory, which will make companies and producers responsible for the recycling or disposal of their products and packaging.
EPR will help make recycling more financially sustainable, keep more waste out of landfills and help the Yukon reach the waste diversion and greenhouse gas reduction targets under Our Clean Future.
Government of Yukon representatives part of Yukon delegation to attend COP27 United Nations climate conference
The Government of Yukon is sending representatives to the 27th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, known as COP27, running from November 6 to 18 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.
Government tables clean audit of 2021–22 Public Accounts
Today, Premier Sandy Silver tabled the 2021–22 Public Accounts in the Yukon Legislative Assembly.
For the 2021–22 fiscal year, the Public Accounts report that the annual, non-consolidated surplus was $8.9 million. This represents a $15.5 million change from the $6.6 million deficit forecast in the 2021–22 Main Estimates. The annual surplus is based on total non-consolidated year-end revenues of $1.712 billion and expenses of $1.707 billion.
Traditional food donated to Elders in long term care
Two moose and three caribou have been donated to Elders in four long-term care homes in the territory by local Yukon outfitters, Yukon Stone Outfitters and Mervyn’s Yukon Outfitting.
The welcomed donations will provide enough game meat and bones for an entire year and will be included as part of meal planning for Elders.
This generous donation helped the First Nations Services team reach their traditional foods program goal this year.
New funding program to provide $1 million a year for community tourism projects
Today Minister of Tourism and Culture Ranj Pillai announced a new $1 million Community Tourism Destination Development Fund to support community projects across the Yukon that focus on sustainable tourism development in their community or region.
Local advocate receives Award for Innovation in Mental Health and Addictions Care for the Yukon
Chris Spencer is the recipient of the Council of the Federation Award for Innovation in Mental Health and Addictions Care in the Yukon.
Recycling Summit to be held in Whitehorse
The Government of Yukon and City of Whitehorse are co-hosting a Recycling Summit from November 1 to 3.
Yukoners are invited to an open house on November 1 from 4 pm to 7 pm at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre. The open house will feature booths from local organizations, art installations, workshops and will be an opportunity for Yukoners to provide in-person feedback on Extended Producer Responsibility.
The summit will bring together organizations and Yukoners interested in recycling and waste diversion to learn more about the circular economy in the Yukon.
New incentive available for commercial timber harvesting businesses
The Government of Yukon is launching a new incentive program offering financial assistance to commercial timber harvesters. This new timber harvesting incentive offers commercial businesses $10 per cubic metre to offset expenses and current fuel costs associated with harvesting firewood.
This new incentive will support the local forest industry, increase firewood supply in the Yukon and encourage more start-up businesses in the industry.
New Better Buildings program makes energy efficient retrofits more affordable for Yukon homes and businesses
The Government of Yukon is launching the Better Buildings program to help Yukoners throughout the territory make energy efficient retrofits to their homes and businesses.
Midwifery Integration Amendments Act receives assent

Registered midwives in the Yukon can now work to their full scope of practice. The Midwifery Integration Amendments Act was passed with unanimous support by the Yukon Legislative Assembly and received assent today.
The legislative changes support registered midwives to operate efficiently and safely within the Yukon’s health care system. With these changes, registered midwives are now able to work to their full scope of practice and midwifery clients are able to receive an improved continuity of care.
Centre de Santé Constellation Health Centre now accepting applications from Yukoners
Starting today, Yukoners can apply to become a client at the Centre de Santé Constellation Health Centre (CSCHC). The new bilingual health centre will open its doors to Yukoners on Monday, November 7, at 102 – 4149 4th Avenue in Whitehorse (Nuvo Building).
Any Yukoner over 16 years of age with a valid Yukon Health Care Insurance Plan is eligible to apply to become a client of the clinic. Individuals younger than 16 years of age may have a guardian apply on their behalf.
Carbon Price Rebate Amendments Act receives assent

Yukon businesses, municipal governments and First Nations governments will continue to benefit from the made-in-Yukon carbon pricing rebate system. The Carbon Price Rebate Amendments Act, 2022, which updates the rebate system to address new federal requirements, received assent today.
Local youth mental wellness programs receive funding
Please note this release has been updated, thirteen Yukon organizations are receiving $400,000 in funding.
Thirteen Yukon organizations are receiving $400,000 in funding from the Yukon government’s Youth Mental Wellness Grant for programs that promote youth mental wellness.
BGC Yukon, BYTE – Empowering Youth Society, the Heart of Riverdale Community Centre and the Youth of Today Society will receive a total of $272,000 in funding. This is in addition to the operational funding received by these organizations.
Ground breaking celebration for the Nisutlin Bay Bridge replacement project
Today, Minister of Highways and Public Works Nils Clarke, Deputy Chief of Teslin Tlingit Council Alex Oakley and Mayor of Teslin Gord Curran attended a community celebration of the beginning of work on the new Nisutlin Bay Bridge replacement project.
In May, the contract for the project was awarded to Graham Infrastructure LP for $160 million. This summer Graham Infrastructure LP completed important preparation work to begin building the new bridge and work will continue throughout the year.

“On October 13, the Department of Health and Social Services was made aware of a privacy breach by the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner.
Government of Yukon completes handover of cannabis retail sales to private sector
The Yukon’s cannabis licensees now operate all retail locations, online sales and delivery. As of today, the Yukon Liquor Corporation’s Cannabis Yukon website will no longer sell cannabis products to Yukoners, leaving cannabis e-commerce to private licensees.
In May 2022, the Government of Yukon introduced regulations that allow licensed cannabis retailers in the Yukon to sell and deliver legal cannabis products to Yukoners. This fulfilled the Government of Yukon’s commitment to support the Yukon’s private cannabis industry.
Yukoners join worldwide earthquake drill this Thursday
At 10:20 am on Thursday, October 20, Yukoners will Drop, Cover and Hold On for the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill.
Millions of people worldwide will participate in the same drill, learning how to stay safe during an earthquake.
The Yukon Emergency Measures Organization is hosting earthquake preparedness activities and learning opportunities all week long. From October 17 to 21, Yukoners can learn more about earthquakes, seismic activity in the Yukon and how to prepare for an emergency. Yukon residents can also enter a contest to win individual or school prizes.
Midwifery Integration Amendments Act tabled
Today, Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee tabled Bill No. 18, the Midwifery Integration Amendments Act. The proposed legislation would allow registered midwives working in the territory to better utilize their full scope of practice.
Eight community projects receive funding from Community Development Fund
The Community Development Fund has awarded a total of $133,279 in funding to eight community projects which will provide social, cultural and economic benefits to Yukoners and Yukon communities. The Japanese Canadian Association of Yukon, Les EssentiElles, Snowboard Yukon Association and Inclusion Yukon Society are just a few of the recipients of the most recent round of Tier 1 funding from the Community Development Fund.
Updated hours for the COVID-19 Testing and Assessment Centre
As part of the Government of Yukon’s shift away from the acute stage of the pandemic response and in response to lower lab-based PCR testing needs, starting October 22 the COVID-19 Testing and Assessment Centre (CTAC) hours of operation will be:
- Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4 pm;
- closed between 12 and 12:30 pm; and
- closed Saturday and Sunday.
