Education

The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Education, says major progress has been made on several initiatives designed to strengthen language and literacy development at the K-12 level since last year’s release of Learning for a Lifetime – A Literacy Plan for Kindergarten to Secondary.

The Honourable Sandy Collins, Minister Responsible for the Office of Public Engagement, today acknowledged September 22–28 as Right to Know Week in Newfoundland and Labrador. Right to Know Week, celebrated internationally, is designed to raise awareness about people’s right to access government information while promoting freedom of information as essential to both democracy and good governance.

The Honourable Sandy Collins, Minster Responsible for the Office of Public Engagement, will speak at the YWCA St. John’s annual general meeting tomorrow (Tuesday, September 23). The event will take place at 10:00 a.m. at Government House in St. John’s on Military Road.

Tourism, Culture and Recreation

The Writers’ Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador has received $80,000 in operational support through the Provincial Government’s Cultural Economic Development Program. The alliance is a not-for-profit organization established in 1987 to contribute to a supportive environment for writing in the province.

Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

Based on the most recent forecast from Environment Canada, Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL) advises residents in various regions of the province of the high potential for very heavy rain over the next six to 18 hours. Forecast models are indicating over 100 mm of rain may fall in a short period of time that may create localized flooding and poor driving conditions. The areas forecast to experience the most significant rain are the south, south west and west coasts. Residents in other areas of the province will also see rain throughout the day and at times this rain will be heavy.

The Provincial Government will hold the seventh of nine public sessions taking place across the province for the Open Government Initiative tomorrow (Tuesday, September 23). The session will take place in Grand Falls-Windsor at 7:00 p.m. at the Mount Peyton Hotel, 214 Lincoln Road.

Natural Resources

The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency, was in Lewisporte today with Wade Verge, MHA for Lewisporte, to announce the winners of a provincial forestry poster contest held as part of National Forest Week celebrations.

Health and Community Services

The work of public health inspectors is being recognized this week with the proclamation of September 22 to 26 as Environmental Public Health Week in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Honourable David Brazil, Minister of Service NL, and the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Health and Community Services, made the announcement today. The theme, The Next 100 Years: Reaching new heights in health protection, acknowledges and recognizes that health is influenced by many factors outside the health care system.

Paul Davis, Premier Designate of Newfoundland and Labrador, on behalf of the Honourable Tom Marshall, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will take part in a number of events tomorrow (Saturday, September 20) and Sunday, September 21.

Justice

The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Justice (Acting), will attend the 13th annual Take Back the Night event in Marystown tonight (Friday, September 19) as part of Sexual Violence Awareness Week. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Harris Drive and McGettigan Boulevard intersection, Marystown.

Service NL

The Honourable David Brazil, Minister of Service NL, will speak at the grand re-opening of the Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Safety Association’s (NLCSA) training facility on Monday, September 22. The event begins at 3:00 p.m. at 80 Glencoe Drive, Mount Pearl. Minister Brazil will speak at approximately 4:00 p.m.

Natural Resources

The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency, will be in Lewisporte on Monday, September 22, to announce the winners of a provincial forestry poster contest held as part of National Forest Week celebrations. The event will take place 10:30 a.m. at Lewisporte Academy, 107 Main Street, Lewisporte. The Minister will be joined by Wade Verge, MHA for Lewisporte.

Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

The Provincial Government is committed to investing in high-priority infrastructure areas such as water and sewer in communities across the province. Today, the Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, was joined by Eli Cross, MHA for Bonavista North, to announce $1.6 million in municipal capital works funding for water and sewer related projects cost-shared with various communities throughout Bonavista North.

The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following event relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

A new rural response unit and firefighting equipment for the District of Bonavista North were announced today at the Fire Hall in Aspen Cove by the Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador. Minister Crummell was joined for the event by Eli Cross, MHA for Bonavista North.

The Provincial Government will hold the sixth of nine public sessions taking place across the province for the Open Government Initiative on Monday, September 22. The session will take place in Marystown at 7:00 p.m. at the Marystown Hotel and Convention Centre, 76 Ville Marie Drive.

Education

As part of a major redevelopment of Exploits Valley High in Grand Falls-Windsor, a tender valued at $295,156 has been awarded to Bluebird Investments Ltd. of Grand Falls-Windsor to replace the cafeteria roof.

Tracey Perry, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, will attend the Take Back the Night march tonight (Friday, September 19) as part of Sexual Violence Awareness Week.

The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador, was joined today by the Honourable Sandy Collins, Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services and MHA for Terra Nova, to announce a new fire truck and firefighting equipment for communities throughout the district.
