Executive Council

The Provincial Government will hold the sixth of nine public sessions taking place across the province for the Open Government Initiative on Monday, September 22. The session will take place in Marystown at 7:00 p.m. at the Marystown Hotel and Convention Centre, 76 Ville Marie Drive.

Education

As part of a major redevelopment of Exploits Valley High in Grand Falls-Windsor, a tender valued at $295,156 has been awarded to Bluebird Investments Ltd. of Grand Falls-Windsor to replace the cafeteria roof.

Tracey Perry, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, will attend the Take Back the Night march tonight (Friday, September 19) as part of Sexual Violence Awareness Week.

Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador, was joined today by the Honourable Sandy Collins, Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services and MHA for Terra Nova, to announce a new fire truck and firefighting equipment for communities throughout the district.

The Honourable Tom Marshall, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today named the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Education, as acting Minister of Justice.

The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador, will participate in the 50th Annual Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services Convention and Trade Show. The convention takes place September 19-22.

The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services- Newfoundland and Labrador, will make the following funding announcements tomorrow (Friday, September 19).

Advanced Education and Skills

The Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills, will visit Memorial University’s Harlow Campus tomorrow (Friday, September 19) in Old Harlow, England at 1:00 p.m. (9:30 a.m. NST). Minister O’Brien will meet with students and faculty and tour the campus.

Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

The Provincial Government is investing over $57,000 to enhance firefighting capabilities in the District of Trinity - Bay De Verde. The funding will be used for the purchase of firefighting equipment for communities throughout the area.

Natural Resources

The Provincial Government is inviting residents to celebrate National Forest Week, from September 21 to 27. The theme, Sunrise in the Forest, recognizes an industry that is diverse, innovative, sustainable and renewable.

Advanced Education and Skills

The Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills, is leading a delegation to participate in two Working International Expo events to help attract skilled workers and meet labour demands in Newfoundland and Labrador. The first event begins this Saturday, September 20, in London, England, followed by the Dublin, Ireland, event on Wednesday, September 24.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier Designate of Newfoundland and Labrador, will speak at a celebration to mark two years since Ronald McDonald House opened in Newfoundland and Labrador tomorrow (Thursday, September 18). The event will begin at 4:00 p.m. at Ronald McDonald House, 150 Clinch Crescent, St. John’s.

Education

Schools and school communities in Newfoundland and Labrador now have access to a new online program, Anaphylaxis in Schools: What Educators Need to Know. The program is designed to provide information about the management of anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction which is on the rise in communities across Canada.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

The Torngat Fish Producers Cooperative Society Limited (Torngat Fish Co-op) will seek ways to increase efficiency and output at its crab and turbot plant in Makkovik with support from the Provincial Government. The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, today announced $9,332 to help the company explore process improvements and consider new technology to make the plant more competitive.

Innovation, Business and Rural Development

Offshore supply operations in Newfoundland and Labrador will be safer as the result of an investment of $300,000 from the Research & Development Corporation (RDC), and $651,950 from Rolls-Royce Canada Limited and industry partners. The collaborative investment will support the development of a new intelligent winch system that will address the challenges of loading and unloading supplies in Arctic and harsh offshore operating environments. The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister Responsible for RDC, made the announcement today at the Rolls-Royce facility in Mount Pearl.

The District of Placentia - St. Mary’s is benefiting from a $4.5 million cost-shared investment to upgrade water and sewer systems and improve roads in the area. The announcement was made today by the Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, along with the Honourable Felix Collins, Attorney General and MHA for Placentia - St. Mary’s.

Innovation, Business and Rural Development

The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development and Minister Responsible for the Research & Development Corporation (RDC), will make an announcement concerning research and development funding for the offshore industry tomorrow (Wednesday, September 17). Minister Sullivan will be joined by Glenn Janes, Chief Executive Officer of RDC, as well as representatives from Rolls-Royce.
