The Provincial Government is recognizing Thursday, October 9, as the second annual School Councils Day to formally acknowledge the contributions of school councils towards the enhancement of school programs and overall student achievement. School Councils Day is part of Education Week, which is being celebrated in Newfoundland and Labrador October 5-11.

Today, the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources, launched the Women in Mining Career Connections information guide. As the first publication of its kind in Newfoundland and Labrador, the guide is a unique educational tool designed for students and teachers at the intermediate, senior high and post-secondary levels.

Since its debut in 2010, the CBC television series Republic of Doyle, filmed exclusively in Newfoundland and Labrador, has experienced record-breaking ratings and positive reviews. The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, attended the season premiere last night at the St. John’s Convention Centre. This is the show’s sixth and final season.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will speak at the Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Industry Association’s third annual Newleef Conference tomorrow (Thursday, October 9). The event will take place at the the Holiday Inn, St. John’s, at 8:30 a.m.

Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

The Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, will participate in the 64th annual Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador Convention and Trade Show. The convention takes place October 9-11 at the Pepsi Centre in Corner Brook.

Natural Resources

The Department of Natural Resources is warning residents about reports of wolf sightings in St. Lewis in Labrador. Several residents of St. Lewis have reported the sightings to conservation officers within the department.

Advanced Education and Skills

The Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills, will address the Skilled Trades Conference for Women and Youth tomorrow (Thursday, October 9) in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. The event takes place at College of the North Atlantic at 9:00 a.m.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will bring remarks at the screening of the season premiere of Republic of Doyle at 8:00 p.m. tonight (Wednesday, October 8). The event will take place at the St. John’s Convention Centre. The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, will also attend the event.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, officially named the new 500-bed residence complex in St. John’s today. Premier Davis was joined by the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills, and Dr. Gary Kachanoski, President and Vice-Chancellor of Memorial University.

Justice

The Honourable Judy Manning, Minister of Public Safety and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced that approximately $41,000 in funding is being provided for the purchase of firefighting equipment in the District of Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune. This investment is in addition to $25,000 that was announced in August to purchase two new, self-contained breathing apparatuses and an all-terrain vehicle for the Francois fire department.

The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will officially dedicate the new residence at Memorial University tomorrow (Wednesday, October 8) in St. John’s. The Premier will be joined by the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills, at the ceremony which will take place in the courtyard outside the residence at 10:00 a.m.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

The Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association (NAIA) will engage in an ambitious promotional campaign with assistance from the Provincial Government’s Fisheries Technology and New Opportunities Program. The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, announced $48,750 for the association today, which will be used to help stage exhibits at events that include Seafood Expo North America in Boston, the Royal St. John’s Regatta, and the Down Home Expo.

Education

Newfoundland and Labrador students are first in Atlantic Canada and fourth in the country when it comes to performance in science, according to the 2013 Pan-Canadian Assessment Program (PCAP) results, which focused primarily on Grade 8 science outcomes. This is the highest ranking achieved by Newfoundland and Labrador since PCAP was initiated in 2007. Newfoundland and Labrador also ranked first in Atlantic Canada in reading and third in Atlantic Canada in mathematics.

Office of the Chief Electoral Officer

Elections Newfoundland and Labrador wishes to notify electors that the Trinity-Bay de Verde district Returning Office is open for Special Ballot voting. The office is located in the Sea Arch Efficiency Units Building No. 1 on Main Street in Burnt Point.

Education and Early Childhood Development

The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, is joining the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association (NLTA) to recognize October 5-11 as Education Week in Newfoundland and Labrador. This year’s theme is I Remember! I Learn! Je me souviens! J'apprends!.

Public Safety

The Honourable Judy Manning, Minister of Public Safety and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador, announced today that this year’s Fire Prevention Week takes place October 5-11. The theme for 2014 is Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives, Test Yours Every Month. To promote this message, the Provincial Government and fire departments across Newfoundland and Labrador are stressing the important role that working smoke alarms play in saving lives.
