School Councils Day Focuses on Student Success

The Provincial Government is recognizing Thursday, October 9, as the second annual School Councils Day to formally acknowledge the contributions of school councils towards the enhancement of school programs and overall student achievement. School Councils Day is part of Education Week, which is being celebrated in Newfoundland and Labrador October 5-11.

Since its debut in 2010, the CBC television series Republic of Doyle, filmed exclusively in Newfoundland and Labrador, has experienced record-breaking ratings and positive reviews. The Honourable Paul Davis, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, attended the season premiere last night at the St. John’s Convention Centre. This is the show’s sixth and final season.

The Honourable Judy Manning, Minister of Public Safety and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced that approximately $41,000 in funding is being provided for the purchase of firefighting equipment in the District of Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune. This investment is in addition to $25,000 that was announced in August to purchase two new, self-contained breathing apparatuses and an all-terrain vehicle for the Francois fire department.

Aquaculture Industry Receives more than $48,000 to Support Marketing Initiatives

The Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association (NAIA) will engage in an ambitious promotional campaign with assistance from the Provincial Government’s Fisheries Technology and New Opportunities Program. The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, announced $48,750 for the association today, which will be used to help stage exhibits at events that include Seafood Expo North America in Boston, the Royal St. John’s Regatta, and the Down Home Expo.

Students Make the Grade in Latest National Science Assessment

Newfoundland and Labrador students are first in Atlantic Canada and fourth in the country when it comes to performance in science, according to the 2013 Pan-Canadian Assessment Program (PCAP) results, which focused primarily on Grade 8 science outcomes. This is the highest ranking achieved by Newfoundland and Labrador since PCAP was initiated in 2007. Newfoundland and Labrador also ranked first in Atlantic Canada in reading and third in Atlantic Canada in mathematics.
