Iqaluit, Nunavut (November 29, 2024) – Premier P.J. Akeeagok and Justice Minister David Akeeagok today expressed their congratulations to the Hon. Susan Cooper on her appointment as the new chief justice of the Nunavut Court of Justice by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
“On behalf of the Government of Nunavut, I would like to extend my sincerest congratulations to Chief Justice Susan Cooper on this well-deserved appointment,” said Premier P.J. Akeeagok. “She ably acted in the role following the retirement of former Chief Justice Neil Sharkey earlier this year and has served as a judge of the Nunavut Court of Justice since 2009. Finally, I would like to once again thank former Chief Justice Neil Sharkey for his years of dedication and service with the Nunavut Court of Justice.”
“Her appointment is a testament to her commitment to justice in Nunavut and a reflection of her dedication to upholding the principles of fairness, integrity and the rule of law in our territory,” said Minister David Akeeagok. “With her knowledge and experience, I am confident in her ability to lead the Nunavut Court of Justice and respond to the unique challenges of delivering justice in our territory. I look forward to working closely with the new chief justice to advance the administration of justice and uphold the rule of law for all Nunavummiut.”
