The Government of Yukon, in partnership with the Yukon Type 1 Diabetes Support Network, is seeking public input on the development of a type 1 diabetes strategy for the territory.
People living with type 1 diabetes, parents of children with type 1 diabetes, educators, health professionals and anyone with an interest in services for people with type 1 diabetes are encouraged to provide their input through focus groups and interviews.
This input will help identify opportunities to enhance diagnosis and determine ways to improve services and supports.
Congratulations to Team Yukon on a successful Canada Summer Games
The Government of Yukon congratulates Team Yukon on its participation at this year’s Canada Summer Games.
Nearly 200 athletes, coaches, managers and support staff represented the Yukon at the Canada Summer Games in Niagara, Ontario from August 6 through August 21. Team Yukon competed in athletics, basketball, canoe, kayak, cycling, golf, soccer, beach and court volleyball, swimming and wrestling. Mara Roldan, cycling, and Darby McIntyre, athletics, were selected as opening and closing Team Yukon flagbearers.
New youth mental wellness grant open to local youth organizations across the territory
A new Youth Mental Wellness Grant is now available for youth-serving organizations in the Yukon through the Youth Directorate and Aboriginal Relations. $300,000 will be provided to four local youth organizations including the Boys & Girls Club of Yukon, BYTE – Empowering Youth Society, the Heart of Riverdale Community Centre and the Youth of Today Society.
Twelve new affordable homes built in Whitehorse

45358 Yukon Inc. officially completed the construction of 12 new affordable homes in the neighbourhood of Copper Ridge in Whitehorse. The homes are already fully tenanted and rented as per the median rent determined by the Yukon Bureau of Statistics. The housing project includes two accessible, barrier-free homes located on the first floor.
Draft action plan aims to increase housing options and supports for Yukoners
A draft action plan for the Yukon is now available to Yukoners and community partners. A finalized action plan will be implemented this fall after it has been refined through collaboration with territorial housing partners. The action plan includes initiatives that will support vulnerable Yukoners in finding safe and affordable homes.

Two of Old Crow’s landmark buildings have been recognized for their historic and cultural significance to the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation and to the Yukon. A ceremony held in the community today recognized the designation of Archdeacon McDonald Memorial Church and St. Luke’s Church as a Yukon historic site under the Historic Resources Act.
Government of Yukon seeks input on intensity-based emissions targets for mining and rebate options for emission-intensive facilities
The Government of Yukon is engaging with the mining industry, First Nations governments, environmental groups and the public on the development of intensity-based emissions targets for the mining sector. The government is also engaging with large industrial facilities subject to the federal Output-Based Pricing System (OBPS) on the development of carbon rebate options.
Under Our Clean Future: A Yukon strategy for climate change, energy and a green economy, the Government of Yukon committed to establishing intensity-based mining targets by the end of 2022.

Additional elk permits available for the 2022–23 hunting season
In recognition of the ongoing interactions with wild elk and agricultural landowners in the Takhini Valley area, the Government of Yukon is introducing a new adaptive elk hunting opportunity.
Eight new Wildlife Act permits will be awarded for bull elk with five-point antlers or less on either side, in the Takhini hunt code area (EL23), effective September 1, 2022, to March 31, 2023. This is in addition to the four existing elk Permit Hunt Authorizations, for a total of 12 elk permits in EL23 for the 2022–23 hunting season.
Yukon firefighters deployed to other regions to support wildfire response
The Government of Yukon has sent four wildland fire personnel to support wildfire response operations in British Columbia, Idaho and Washington State.
The Yukon government sent an air attack officer and trainee air attack officer to Cranbook, B.C. on August 10 to assist with nearby wildfires. An individual aircraft dispatcher was also sent to assist in Grangeville, Idaho, on August 9. A trainee safety officer will also be sent to Washington State.
Four Yukon youth receive Outstanding Youth Achievement Awards for remarkable service
Four youth have been awarded the Outstanding Youth Achievement Award for their devotion and contribution to their communities.
The 2022 recipients are Alia Drummond from Haines Junction, Aliya Grant from Carcross, Gavin Howells from Whitehorse and Ava Irving-Staley from Whitehorse.
Government of Yukon Main Administration Building renamed in honour of former Yukon Commissioner Jim Smith
The Government of Yukon is recognizing the contributions of Jim Smith, the Yukon’s longest serving Commissioner, by renaming the Main Administration Building in his honour. Today, Deputy Premier Tracy-Anne McPhee, the Commissioner of Yukon Angélique Bernard, along with Jim Smith’s family members unveiled the building’s new outdoor signage and an interior plaque with Jim Smith’s biography located near the main entrance.
New web hub, learning and professional development resources now available for Yukon early childhood educators
This is a joint release with the Government of Canada.
Learning and professional development for educators is key in creating a universal child care system that is high-quality, affordable, accessible and inclusive for Yukon children. Through the 2021–2022 to 2024–2025 Canada–Yukon Early Learning and Child Care Agreement, the governments of Canada and Yukon are providing funding of $200,000 to support early childhood educators employed in licensed programs with continued learning and development opportunities.
Four Yukon-based organizations awarded $150,000 for projects addressing violence against Indigenous women and girls
The Government of Yukon’s Prevention and Aboriginal Women Fund is providing a total of $150,000 to the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, Skookum Jim Friendship Centre, Carcross/Tagish First Nation and Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation for projects that aim to address and prevent violence against Indigenous women and girls.
Statement from Chief Medical Officer of Health on monkeypox risk factors in the Yukon and the territory’s response
The Yukon’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Sudit Ranade has issued the following statement:
“In July, the first case of monkeypox was confirmed in the Yukon. Monkeypox is rarely fatal and usually causes mild disease that resolves within two to four weeks. For some people, the symptoms can be challenging to manage, and can include fever, headache, fatigue, sore throat, cough, and a painful skin rash.
Team Yukon set to compete at 2022 Canada Summer Games in Niagara
Nearly 200 Team Yukon athletes, coaches, managers and support staff are travelling to Niagara, Ontario to represent the territory at the 2022 Canada Summer Games.
Athletes will compete in several sports over the next two weeks, including basketball, canoe and kayak, cycling, golf, soccer, swimming, volleyball and wrestling.
Cyclist Mara Roldan, who earned gold at the 2022 Canadian Road Championships earlier this summer in the junior criterium, has been chosen as Team Yukon’s flag bearer for the opening ceremonies.
School bus routes available for 2022-23 school year
Whitehorse school bus routes for the 2022-23 school year are now finalized and can be found online. School buses will be operating normally for the 2022-23 school year. Mask use is no longer mandatory but continues to be encouraged.
Community Development Fund provides over $1.1 million to fund 21 Yukon projects
The Community Developmental Fund has awarded a total of $1,107,960 for 21 community projects across the Yukon. The projects receiving funds promote social, cultural and economic benefits for Yukoners. Successful applicants include the Dawson Society for Children and Families, Yukon Circus Society, Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in First Nation and the Yukon Anti-Poverty Coalition.
Minister Pillai meets with immigration Ministers to plan the future of Canada’s immigration system
Minister Ranj Pillai joined counterparts from across Canada at the Forum of Ministers Responsible for Immigration in Saint John, New Brunswick on July 28 to discuss pan-Canadian labour shortages and the future of immigration to Canada.
