This week, Newfoundland and Labrador-based film and television productions, as well as a number of individuals working in the industry from this province, were nominated for Canada’s top honours in film and television.

Five television productions, two digital media productions and one feature film received Canadian Screen Awards nominations from the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, along with a number of talented individuals from this province. The award show will be broadcast on Friday, May 31, 2024, at 9:30 p.m. (Newfoundland Daylight Time) on CBC and the CBC Gem App.

The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television is the largest non-profit professional media arts organization in Canada. With a membership of more than 4,000 emerging and established industry professionals, the Academy is dedicated to developing, recognizing, celebrating, and advocating for Canadian talent in the film, television and digital media sectors.

Residents of Newfoundland and Labrador are reminded that Daylight Saving Time begins this weekend. At 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 10, clocks should be set one hour ahead.

When adjusting clocks, residents are encouraged to take the opportunity to change the batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

The Department of Justice and Public Safety advises that smoke alarms are required to be installed in the following areas of a residence:

• On every level of your home, including the basement.
• In every bedroom.
• In the hallway or room outside of every bedroom or separate sleeping area.

It is recommended that households or cabins that have a wood, oil or propane fuel-fired appliance also have a carbon monoxide detector installed on each level of the structure.

Today the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador joins organizations, groups and individuals across the province and around the world in celebrating International Women’s Day.

This day serves as a reminder of the progress made in advancing women’s empowerment and the challenges that still exist in achieving gender equality.

This year’s Canadian theme for International Women’s Day – Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress – underscores the critical need to prioritize investments in women’s education, health, economic empowerment and leadership opportunities. Investing in women enhances individual well-being, and drives positive change within families, communities and societies.

Globally, the theme is Inspire Inclusion, which is also very important because every woman regardless of background or circumstances should feel valued, respected and empowered. Inclusion is about recognizing the unique perspectives and experiences that each woman brings to the table and ensuring that all voices are heard and respected.

The Provincial Government has made significant investments to support women and girls, annually allocating funding to support women’s centres, status of women councils and other equity-seeking organizations that work to achieve equality and justice for women and girls in the province.

In December 2023, the Provincial Government announced the signing of a four-year bilateral agreement with Women and Gender Equality Canada, resulting in $13.6 million in new funding to invest in violence prevention-related initiatives throughout the province. This is a commitment to foster an environment where everyone living in this province can thrive, feel valued, be respected, and live without fear.

The formation of the Provincial Indigenous Women’s Reconciliation Council is another positive step as it works to coordinate and lead meaningful action to address existing challenges and obstacles in the areas of culture, health and wellness, justice and human security, which impact Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people.

Ongoing investments and initiatives by the Provincial Government are also resulting in sustained benefits for women in the areas of skills development, childcare, leadership, entrepreneurship and business funding.

The Proponent is proposing to construct and operate a 16.5-hectare sand and gravel quarry located in Conception Bay South, approximately 580 metres southeast of the Peacekeepers Way, off Route 60. The quarry will be used to produce aggregate materials (sand and gravel) for use and sale in construction projects across the province. The undertaking was registered on March 6, 2024; the deadline for public comment is April 11, 2024, and the minister’s decision is due by April 20, 2024.

The Provincial Government is now accepting applications for the Job Creation Partnerships program. This year will feature the following increased pay for workers to reflect increased Employment Insurance (EI) and minimum wage rates:

• Supervisor or high-skilled positions – $668 per week, up from $650 (e.g., Project Supervisor, Qualified Carpenter or Program Manager)
• Moderately skilled positions – $646 per week, up from $623; and (e.g., Museum Interpreter, Administrator or Program Coordinator)
• Labourer or lower-skilled positions – $624 per week, up from $580 (e.g., Labourer, Office Clerk or Maintenance Worker)

The Job Creation Partnerships program is designed to support projects that provide EI eligible individuals with opportunities to gain work experience to improve their employment prospects. Employers can apply online. Deadline for applying is June 30, 2024.

The Honourable Dr. Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation, are sending their best wishes to the cast and crew of Come From Away, premiering tonight at the Nissay Theatre in Tokyo, Japan.

The hit Broadway musical’s Japanese premiere is expected to pique interest in travel to Newfoundland and Labrador.

Minister Crocker traveled to Japan in October to promote the province’s tourism and creative industries. Minister Crocker was joined by officials from the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts and Recreation and met with Japanese tour operators that have an interest in selling vacations to Newfoundland and Labrador. The department has a marketing specialist in Tokyo this week working in partnership with Destination Canada to promote Newfoundland and Labrador with travel trade partners.

Japanese travelers tend to prioritize sustainable and responsible travel options. As destinations that lead in these areas, Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador are well positioned to inspire Japanese visitors.

Newfoundland and Labrador’s own production of the Irene Sankoff and David Hein Come From Away musical returns to the J.R. Smallwood Arts and Culture Centre in Gander this summer, directed by Jillian Keiley and produced by Michael Rubinoff.

Safe Haven Shelter at 10 St. Clare Avenue in St. John’s serves as a warming centre during adverse weather events. The emergency shelter line will identify other options as required.

The Provincial Government is monitoring forecast information on a weather system that is anticipated to affect regions of the province over the coming days (March 7-9).

This weather event is forecasted to begin tomorrow afternoon (Thursday, March 7) and persist until Saturday morning. The system is predicted to bring significant snowfall, ice pellets and/or freezing rain amounts to southern, eastern and northeastern regions of the island. The highest precipitation amounts are forecasted for areas on the Avalon and Burin peninsulas. Impacts of this multi-day weather event may include travel disruptions, school and business closures, poor driving conditions and possible power outages.

The Provincial Emergency Operations Centre is currently activated to Level 1 – Enhanced Monitoring. While no action is required from emergency management partners at this time, they are asked to continue monitoring for updates and forecast information.

Residents are encouraged to monitor the Environment Canada forecast for the most up-to-date information.

Snow plows and ice control crews will be active during the weather event, however visibility will be reduced leading to unsafe driving conditions. Motorists are reminded to slow down and drive to conditions, and to check NL 511 via the mobile app, nl511.ca or call 511 for driving conditions in your area.

Municipalities and local service districts should ensure appropriate provisions are made for the delivery of services during severe weather events.

The Honourable Dr. Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, is in the United States attending meetings in Washington, D.C. to highlight the opportunities in our province.

While in Washington, the Premier is participating in several meetings including a roundtable discussion with the Canadian-American Business Council following the Canada-U.S. engagement strategy launched earlier this year. Newfoundland and Labrador exports $4.6 billion in goods annually to the United States, particularly energy, seafood products and critical minerals.

Premier Furey and the Honourable Elvis Loveless, Minister of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture, will be attending Seafood Expo North America 2024 taking place in Boston, Massachusetts, from March 10 to 12.

Premier Furey is scheduled to speak at the Newfoundland and Labrador Seafood Industry Reception on Saturday, March 9, 2024. The event is taking place at the Hyatt Regency Boston, 1 Avenue de Lafayette, Boston, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Seafood Expo North America has been North America’s premier seafood marketing event for over 30 years and is vital to the promotion of Newfoundland and Labrador seafood to global markets.

Speaker, today I rise to acknowledge National Social Work Month and recognize the invaluable contribution of social workers in our province.

Social workers in Newfoundland and Labrador work in diverse areas of practice, including child protection, foster care and adoptions, health care, housing, senior care, addictions, mental health and income support.

This year, the focus of National Social Work Month is “Seven Points of Unity – Many Possibilities,” which celebrates the seven core values of the recently revised Code of Ethics that guides the ethical, inclusive and empowering practice of social workers in Newfoundland and Labrador, and across Canada.

In my own Department, I witness the passion, professionalism and commitment of social workers who dedicate themselves daily to improving the health, safety and well-being of individuals and families.

Speaker, I would also like to take this moment to recognize a member of my Department, Deanne O’Brien, who is the Recipient of the 2024 Newfoundland and Labrador College of Social Workers Pride in the Profession Award for her outstanding contribution to the social work profession.

I also extend my appreciation to those who work alongside social workers and support them in their work.

The following statement was given today in the House of Assembly by the Honourable Tom Osborne, Minister of Health and Community Services:

Speaker, I rise in this Honourable House to recognize Pharmacy Appreciation Month and the more than 1,000 pharmacy professionals who work every day to meet the health care needs of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

Pharmacy professionals continue to play a significant role in our health care system. Often the first point of contact for health services, pharmacists are trusted members of our communities and core to our clinical teams and hospitals. They ensure that patients get the most appropriate medication, manage drug interactions, assess and prescribe for many common conditions, provide knowledge of over-the-counter products, train patients on medical devices, and administer many vaccinations.

Our government is proud to have worked with the Newfoundland and Labrador Pharmacy Board and the Pharmacists’ Association of Newfoundland and Labrador last year to give pharmacists a greater scope of practice and more autonomy than ever before.

By expanding the scope of practice, pharmacists can now extend prescriptions for patients to a maximum of 12 months and can assess for and prescribe hormonal contraception. They can also assess and prescribe for a total of 33 common ailments.

Our pharmacy professionals provide accessible health care across the province and are an integral part of our health care system.

The Provincial Government is taking applications for its Employment Steps for Success Program (ESS).

A total investment of $1 million is now available to non-profit community organizations to assist people with career planning and employment readiness.

Last year, the Employment Steps for Success Program funded 19 community organizations in delivering ESS programming.

Funding of up to $50,000 per stream is available to organizations that apply online under one or both of the following streams by March 13, 2024:

• Adult Pre-Employment
• Career Exploration for Youth

After a week full of competition, sport and camaraderie, the 2024 Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games came to a close this past weekend in Gander.

The Honourable Dr. John Haggie, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs and Member of the House of Assembly for Gander, attended both the opening ceremonies on February 24 and the closing ceremonies on March 2. At the event, Minister Haggie presented the Premier’s Cup to Team St. John’s/North, who finished at the top of the medal standings with nine gold, eight silver and three bronze medals.

The Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Trophy was presented to Team Mount Pearl/South for showing the most improvement from one Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games to the next.

The Lieutenant Governor’s Award was presented to Team Indigenous as the team that best demonstrated the overall spirit of friendly competition and sportsmanship – the essence of the Newfoundland and Labrador Games.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Games is the largest multi-sport event for youth in the province and has been encouraging participation in sport and the pursuit of athletic excellence for nearly 50 years.

To support this year’s Games in Gander, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador made $740,000 available, which is administered through Sport NL and the Town of Gander. Sport NL works in collaboration with the local host organizing committees and provincial sport organizations to deliver the Games.

Applications are open for the 2024-25 big game license draw. The deadline to apply is May 3, 2024.

Applications for resident moose, caribou, black bear and trapper licences are available online only. Eligible hunters and trappers must have a Wildlife Information Management System (WIMS) account to apply for a license.

The 2024-25 moose quota for the island of Newfoundland is 27,590 licences, including 18,390 either-sex, 8,740 male-only, and 460 not-for-profit licences. This is a net increase of 15 licences from 2023-24; however, quotas have been adjusted in 23 moose management areas (MMA). In Labrador, 345 moose licences are available for the resident big game draw, an increase of five licenses.

The caribou quota on the island of Newfoundland is 583, including 373 either-sex and 210 male-only licences, an increase of eight licences from 2023-24. Caribou hunting is prohibited in Labrador.

Due to positive results from an initiative to re-introduce Newfoundland woodland caribou on the Grey Islands (Bell Island and Groias Island), a small quota of eight licences has been set for 2024-25.

To be considered eligible for the 2024 big game license draw, you must:

• Be a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador
• Be at least 16 years of age by August 31, 2024
• Have a Hunter Certificate Number
• Have already completed the Firearms Safety/Hunter Education Course or transferred hunting credentials by November 30, 2023
