Justice and Public Safety

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General will be joined by Owen Brophy, Superintendent of Prisons, to announce changes to the Disciplinary Segregation Policy. The announcement will take place at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary tomorrow (Wednesday, October 4) at 1:00 p.m.

The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, will attend the official opening of Gander Elementary School tomorrow (October 4) at 1:30 p.m. Minister Kirby will be joined by the Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services and MHA for Gander.

Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, will attend the opening night of Neighbourhood Dance Works’ 2017 Festival of New Dance today (Tuesday, October 3). The event takes place at the Resource Centre for the Arts (LSPU Hall), 3 Victoria Street, St. John’s at 8:00 p.m.

The Honourable Lisa Dempster, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development will present the 2017 Seniors of Distinction Awards tomorrow (Tuesday, October 3). The event begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Capital Hotel, 208 Kenmount Road, St. John’s. Minister Dempster will be joined by Parliamentary Secretary, Derek Bennett.

A tender has been issued for the demolition of the former Virginia Park Elementary School in St. John's. The tender is for the demolition of the building structure of the old school and a tender for the new parking lot and landscaping will be issued in 2018.

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, is in Ottawa today (Monday, October 2) to attend the installation of Canada’s 29th Governor General – Julie Payette. The installation will begin at 11:00 a.m. (EST).

The Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, will take part in the Coalition of Provincial and Territorial Advisory Councils on the Status of Women’s 2017 Annual Meeting on Monday, October 2 at the Courtyard by Marriot Hotel, 131 Duckworth Street, St. John’s. The meeting begins at 8:00 a.m.

Building on commitments made during the recent Aquaculture Industry Summit held in Gander this week to support growth in the sector, the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, today announced over $35,000 from the Business Development Support Program for Merasheen Oyster Farms.

Since implementing a merit-based appointments process through passage of the Independent Appointments Commission Act in May 2016, the Provincial Government has appointed over 200 individuals to agencies, boards and commissions. Newfoundland and Labrador currently has the most open and accessible appointments process in the country.

The Provincial Government, along with Canadians and citizens from around the world, join to recognize National Seniors Day and International Day of Older Persons, observed annually on October 1.

Today, the Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment was joined by Nick Whalen, MP for St. John’s East, for an announcement of municipal infrastructure funding for the Town of Wabana on Bell Island. The Provincial Government is contributing over $892,000 toward a municipal drinking water project.
