Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, as well as Mark Browne, Parliamentary Secretary of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, will lead a tour for media of the Colonial Building. The tour will take place at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, November 6.

Advanced Education, Skills and Labour

As part of the Municipalities NL Annual Conference taking place from November 2 to 4 in Corner Brook, the Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, will be joined by department officials to provide an overview of the action items outlined in the Provincial Government’s Way Forward on Immigration. Particular focus will be on the Regional Welcoming Communities Initiative.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is pleased with today’s decision by the United States Department of Commerce that Newfoundland and Labrador would be excluded from any tariffs on softwood lumber produced in this province.

Natural Resources

The The Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, today at Mineral Resources Review 2017 discussed recently released research by the Geological Survey that highlights the potential for new discoveries of gold and other metals in central Newfoundland. The data, available at: www.nr.gov.nl.ca/nr/mines/geoscience/publications/latest_pubs.html are based on soil samples collected from the Sheffield Lake, Springdale, Dawes Pond, The Topsails and Rainy Lake map areas.

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, hosted the second annual Premier’s Forum on Local Government yesterday in Corner Brook. Premier Ball and the Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, participated in discussions with delegates focusing on the sustainability of local governments and regional governance.

The Honourable Perry Trimper, Speaker of the House of Assembly, advises that the House of Assembly will open for the fall sitting at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, November 6.

Derek Bennett, Parliamentary Secretary for Children, Seniors and Social Development, will join the Newfoundland and Labrador Injury Prevention Council to launch National Fall Prevention Month tomorrow (Thursday, November 2). The event takes place at Seniors NL, 24 Road Deluxe, St. John’s, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, will attend a celebration of Stella’s Circle Changing Lives Campaign tomorrow (Thursday, November 2) at 114 Cabot Street, St. John’s. The event begins at 12:00 p.m.

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety, today released the interim report from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. The report can be viewed online at www.justice.gov.nl.ca/just/publications/pdf/MMIWG_interim_report.pdf

Municipal Affairs and Environment

The Provincial Government announced today that it is issuing two Requests for Proposals to evaluate the current implementation plan within the Provincial Waste Management Strategy. The results of the work will be used to ensure that the strategy is being implemented in a modern, efficient and cost-effective manner.

Natural Resources

Mineral Resources Review, taking place this week in St. John’s, showcases the mineral exploration and mining industry in Newfoundland and Labrador. The largest event of its kind in Atlantic Canada, the conference and trade show attracts approximately 700 delegates and exhibitors representing the mining industry over the three-day event.

The Department of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation is accepting applications for the 66th annual Arts and Letters Awards Program. As part of the Provincial Government’s commitment to improved service delivery, for the first time ever, submissions for the program will only be accepted in digital format. The deadline for entries is December 15.

Fisheries and Land Resources

At a recent ceremony, Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Officer Travis McDonald was announced as the 2016 Provincial Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Officer of the Year and the 2016 Shikar–Safari Club International Wildlife Officer of the Year for Newfoundland and Labrador. Mr. McDonald received the award during the Ninth Annual Uniformed Services Gala held at Canadian Forces Station in St. John’s.

Elections Newfoundland and Labrador wishes to notify electors that Special Ballot voting for the Mount Pearl North by-election begins on Wednesday, November 1, 2017, at 9:00 a.m. Electors who sent in Special Ballot applications prior to this date will receive their Special Ballot voting kits in the mail.
