The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, accompanied by Mark Browne, Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, today toured CoLab Software to view a $116,362 project that will allow designers to work collaboratively on technical drawings and 3D models.

The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minster of Education and Early Childhood Development is recognizing February 11-17 as Education Week and Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week in Newfoundland and Labrador by attending a proclamation signing this morning at Laval High School in Placentia. This year’s theme is Believe and Achieve.

The tour takes place at 5 Hallett Crescent, St. John's, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Office of the Child and Youth Advocate

The Office of the Child and Youth Advocate is very concerned about ‎events that have recently transpired related to Stephenville High School. All students have a right to safety, and all students have a right to their education. There may be many ways to reach these outcomes for the benefit of all. However in discussions with senior officials with the NL English School District, it has become apparent to the Child and Youth Advocate that the current policies and legislation do not provide the District with sufficient ability to address issues such as those that have arisen in Stephenville.

Colin Holloway, Parliamentary Secretary for Municipal Affairs and Environment and MHA for Terra Nova, on behalf of the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, today toured Chatman’s Bakery to view the progress of a $152,354 investment by the Provincial Government to develop a customized semi-automated peanut butter ball production cell. This is the latest in a number of technology tours of companies by representatives of the Provincial Government.

Education and Early Childhood Development

The Atkinson Centre at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education released a new report today, Early Childhood Education Report 2017, providing a detailed assessment of provincial and territorial frameworks for early childhood education in Canada. In 2017, Newfoundland and Labrador saw an improvement in the province’s overall score, receiving 8.5 out of 15.

Mark Browne, Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, will participate in the Mount Pearl Frosty Festival’s Pedestrian Parade of Lights & Cauldron Lighting today, (Wednesday, February 7). The parade begins at 7:00 p.m. at O’Donel High School, and ends at St. David’s Park where the festival cauldron will be lit.

Transportation and Works

Building off a successful road construction season in which more than 600 lane kilometres of highway were paved and more than 300 culverts replaced, the Department of Transportation and Works today announced the 2018-19 edition of the Five-Year Provincial Roads plan. Again this year, $77.2 million has been allocated for the program.
