The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources, is attending the Seafood Expo North America 2018 at the Boston Convention Centre. Minister Byrne will host a reception for industry on March 10 and attend the expo on March 11 where he will highlight Newfoundland and Labrador’s 2017 Seafood Industry Year in Review document and provide a comprehensive overview of the province’s wild and farmed fisheries.

The Department of Justice and Public Safety has received a tremendous amount of feedback following the inaugural committee meeting on violence against women and girls. The meeting, which was held on December 8, 2017, brought participants together to discuss the areas that need to change, both within the justice system and elsewhere, to end violence against women and girls.

Government Removes Choice of Counsel Provision in Legal Aid Act

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is introducing an amendment to the Legal Aid Act which would remove a Legal Aid client’s option to choose a private practice lawyer. Instead, the client will be provided with a lawyer employed by the Legal Aid Commission. In extenuating circumstances, the Director of the Legal Aid Commission will continue to have the authority to appoint a private practice lawyer.
