Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

The Provincial Government continues its commitment to supporting small businesses, as today the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, announced over $154,000 for two tourism initiatives on the Great Northern Peninsula.

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

Finance

The Honourable Tom Osborne, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board, will speak at the Clarenville Chamber of Commerce Luncheon on Monday, April 2. The event takes place at the St. Jude’s Hotel, 247 Trans-Canada Highway, beginning at 12:00 p.m.

Fisheries and Land Resources

An investigation carried out by the Department of Fisheries and Land Resources Compliance Division concludes staff carried out due diligence in accordance with departmental policy in analyzing a proposal from Bulk Logistics Group Ltd. to develop a forestry initiative in central Newfoundland.

Fisheries and Land Resources

The Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources, today released the Provincial Government’s position on the inland management of Atlantic salmon for the 2018-19 season. The province’s position was made clear to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans through the Salmon Advisory Council during the council’s meeting held March 27 in St. John’s.

Transportation and Works

Supported by $6.1 million in Budget 2018 - Building for Our Future, the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced that a new 94-bed, state-of-the-art mental health and addictions facility will be built in St. John’s. The new facility will be built on the Health Sciences Centre campus and will be connected to the existing hospital with site work expected to begin in summer 2019. A new parking garage will also be built on the site to add extra parking capacity.

The Honourable Tom Osborne, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board, will speak at the St. John’s Board of Trade luncheon tomorrow (Thursday, March 29). The event takes place at the Capital Hotel, 208 Kenmount Road, St. John's, beginning at 12:00 p.m.

Education and Early Childhood Development

The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, will bring greetings at the AAA Midget Female Atlantics Opening Ceremony, tomorrow (Thursday, March 29). The event will take place at the Mount Pearl Glacier, Rink 1, 45 Olympic Drive, Mount Pearl, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will make a major announcement to support mental health and addictions in the province tomorrow (Thursday, March 29).

Service NL

In an effort to reduce costs and waste in the province’s landfills without impacting frontline services, the Motor Registration Division (MRD) will begin issuing driver’s licence and vehicle registration renewal reminders via email. As of April 30, 2018, these items will no longer be sent out through regular mail.

Mr. Speaker, I rise today in this Honourable House to recognize College of the North Atlantic’s leadership role in a new project through the federally-funded initiative, the Kenya Education for Employment Project.

The Honourable Lisa Dempster, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, will speak at Memorial University’s School of Social Work’s Annual Pledge of Professionalism Ceremony on Wednesday, March 28, at 6:00 p.m. The ceremony will take place in the Main Auditorium of the Health Sciences Centre, St. John’s.

Justice and Public Safety

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety, will bring greetings at the final ceremony for the 2018 Correctional Officer Recruit Training. The ceremony will take place tomorrow (Wednesday, March 28) at 11:30 a.m. at the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Centre Powerplex, 90 Crosbie Rd, St. John's.

The Honourable Tom Osborne, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board, today announced a series of positive changes to taxation that will support citizens and businesses. Changes include a minimum five per cent reduction in the tax on automobile insurance over the next four years, as well as increasing the exemption threshold of the provincial payroll tax, and introduction of a new tax credit for search and rescue volunteers.
