Dennis Browne, QC, has been appointed Consumer Advocate for Automobile Insurance for Newfoundland and Labrador. In this capacity Mr. Browne will represent consumers during the upcoming automobile insurance review carried out by the Board of Commissioner of Public Utilities (PUB).

Executive Council

The Provincial Government is inviting industry, businesses and labour organizations, along with the general public, to share their views on reducing trade barriers that impede business growth across Canadian provinces and territories. The identification of trade barriers that could be eliminated is being undertaken nationally and is a commitment outlined in the new Canadian Free Trade Agreement, which came into effect on July 1, 2017.

Tomorrow, the Provincial Government will formally state its intent in the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador to introduce legislation which will allow for a change of sex designation on a birth certificate from female or male to non-binary.

Amendments to the Highway Traffic Act and Regulations designed to deter impaired driving and help drivers develop safe and sober driving habits come into force today.

A busing company and an Official Inspection Station mechanic have been served with a total of eight summary offence tickets for violations of the Official Inspection Station Regulations under the Highway Traffic Act. The tickets were issued after an investigation was conducted by the Highway Enforcement Branch of Service NL.

The world’s largest free trade agreement, the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), comes into effect today. CETA will result in new opportunities for Newfoundland and Labrador businesses who will benefit from the immediate elimination of 98 per cent of all tariffs on Canadian goods as well as a further one per cent reduction over the next seven years.

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, will attend Federal, Provincial and Territorial meetings of Ministers of Infrastructure tomorrow (Thursday, September 21) in Ottawa, Ontario.

Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner

In 2016 the provincial government passed legislation that created the Public Service Pension Plan Corporation and placed it outside of provincial laws that protect the privacy of personal information and provide access to information about the Corporation’s operations, including spending and salaries. That corporation was subsequently rebranded as Provident10.
