Children, Seniors and Social Development

Derek Bennett, Parliamentary Secretary for Children, Seniors and Social Development, will bring greetings at the Newfoundland and Labrador Therapeutic Recreation Association’s (NLTRA) Annual General Meeting and Conference tomorrow (Thursday, October 19), 9:00 a.m. at The Lantern, 35 Barnes Road, St. John’s.

Municipal Affairs and Environment

Mr. Speaker, I rise in this Honourable House to acknowledge all candidates who put their names forward for municipal elections in September and to congratulate those who were elected. New councils are in place throughout Newfoundland and Labrador and they will work to enhance services and develop strong, sustainable communities for people and families across the province.

Fisheries and Land Resources

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to congratulate Richard Oram, Newfoundland and Labrador’s 2017 inductee into the Atlantic Agricultural Hall of Fame. Mr. Oram, or Dick to his family and friends, has made significant contributions to the agricultural industry and is a worthy inductee.

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Environment, has announced the following event relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

Education and Early Childhood Development

Teachers, staff and students today celebrated the official opening of Juniper Ridge Intermediate, a new Grade 5-7 school located in Torbay. The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, toured the new school today and was joined by representatives of the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District and School Board, school administration and members of the community.

Justice and Public Safety

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General, is teaming up with community groups to find ways to make Newfoundland and Labrador a safer place for women and girls.

Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation

The Provincial Government has provided a combined investment of $85,000 for this year’s St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival including support for the Interactive Film Forum.

Health and Community Services

The Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services, will be available to media today (Wednesday, October 18) at 11:30 a.m. to discuss ambulance services in Labrador.

The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, will attend the official opening of Juniper Ridge Intermediate school tomorrow (Wednesday, October 18) at 1:00 p.m. The school is located at 20 Darryl Pye Drive, Torbay.

The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, will speak at the Canadian Manufacturing and Exporters conference ‘Embedding Innovation into LEAN Practice’ tomorrow (Wednesday, October 18). The event takes place at the Hampden Inn & Suites, 411 Stavanger Drive, St. John’s, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

I rise today to congratulate Michael Bartellas on being awarded the 2017 Charles Tabachnick Canadian Medical Hall of Fame Award for leadership and innovation in health care.

Mr. Speaker, our government believes in equality for everyone, and we respect the diversity of all individuals. That is why we adopted the policy to allow for a change of sex designation on a birth certificate from female or male to non-binary.
