Children, Seniors and Social Development

Derek Bennett, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Lisa Dempster, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, will bring greetings tomorrow (Saturday, November 18) at the Annual General Meeting of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador (Sport NL). The meeting will take place at the Hampton Inn and Suites, 411 Stavanger Drive, St. John’s, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Education and Early Childhood Development

Today marked the official opening of École intermédiaire et secondaire francophone de Saint-Jean, a multi-level school located on Rickett’s Road in St. John’s. The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, participated in today’s event and was joined by representatives of the Conseil scolaire francophone provincial de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador, school administration, teachers, staff, students and members of the community.

Executive Council

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced $500,000 to support Theatre Newfoundland Labrador in the construction of a new multi-functional theatre complex in Cow Head.

Fisheries and Land Resources

The Town of Centreville-Wareham-Trinity and the Department of Fisheries and Land Resources have entered into a new Municipal Habitat Stewardship Agreement that will help protect valuable wetland and coastal habitats in the community.

Elections Newfoundland and Labrador would like to notify electors in the district of Mount Pearl North that the deadline to apply for Special Ballot voting is today.

Pursuant to section 112 of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, 2015, ministers are required to consult with the OIPC on all proposed legislation that “could have implications for access to information or protection of privacy.” After receipt of a draft of the Prescription Monitoring Act, officials of the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) met with officials of the Department of Health and Community Services to convey concerns about the proposed legislation.

The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, will join the Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Fisheries and Land Resources and MHA for Corner Brook, as well as Dr. Bill Radford, President of College of the North Atlantic, to announce the first round of project approvals through the Workforce Innovation Centre.

Health and Community Services

Twenty new home hemodialysis machines will be purchased over the next two years to provide opportunities for patients to participate in home-based dialysis treatment. Funding of $600,000 will be provided for the purchase of the machines.

Derrick Bragg, Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries and Land Resources, will speak at a Municipal Stewardship Agreement signing ceremony tomorrow (Friday, November 17) in the Town of Centreville-Wareham-Trinity.

Transportation and Works

The Department of Transportation and Works has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to seek proponents to provide ferry services to seven communities along the south coast of Newfoundland.

Municipal Affairs and Environment

The Provincial Government, through InnovateNL, is investing approximately $234,000 to support a research and development project for Jumping Bean Coffee to create a more sustainable business while increasing its profile as an environmentally friendly coffee brand. Mark Browne, Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation, toured the production facility today.

Justice and Public Safety

The Provincial Government is strengthening transparency and accountability in the justice system by introducing legislation related to a Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) in Newfoundland and Labrador. The new legislation calls for a team that will investigate all matters involving death, serious injury, sexual offence, and domestic violence as well as other matters of significant public interest that involve police.
