Data Privacy Day 2018 happens this weekend! On January 28, 2018, the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner joins other provinces and territories across Canada as well as other countries around the world in celebrating Data Privacy Day.

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General, has named Don Roche as the new Superintendent of Prisons for Newfoundland and Labrador. Mr. Roche will take over from Owen Brophy, who recently retired after working in corrections in the province for more than 35 years.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has achieved a bilateral agreement with the Government of Canada, outlining how this province will invest its share of targeted federal funding in health care. Newfoundland and Labrador is the second province to reach such an agreement.

The Honourable Lisa Dempster, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, at the invite of the Honourable Jane Philpott, Federal Minister of Indigenous Services, will take part in a meeting on First Nations, Inuit and Métis Nation child and family services this week in Ottawa.

The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety, will be joined by representatives from the Public Legal Information Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (PLIAN), and the Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre, to announce a partnership supporting the sexual violence legal support program.

The Governments of Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada are investing more than $1.3 million to establish an entrepreneurship support centre and to support three businesses which will help create prosperous communities on the Bonavista Peninsula.

The Provincial Government has approved the request of the Local Service District of George’s Brook-Milton to incorporate and become a town.

The Provincial Government is now accepting applications for enthusiastic and experienced volunteers to join Team Newfoundland and Labrador as mission staff at the 2019 Canada Winter Games, taking place February 15 to March 3, 2019, in Red Deer, Alberta.

This year, the Provincial Government is once again recognizing Weedless Wednesday as a day when those who smoke are encouraged to stop for one day with the intention of kick-starting the process of quitting smoking. Weedless Wednesday is held annually as part of National Non-Smoking Week, which runs this year from January 21 to 27.

Through an investment from the Government of Canada, EXCITE Corporation Inc.’s Genomics-Based R&D Centre for Health in Grand Falls-Windsor will expand its genomics-based research and development into hearing loss and continue to build on the region’s knowledge-based economy. Innovations in the diagnosis and treatment of hereditary hearing loss can improve the quality of life of countless people in Canada and around the world, while creating economic opportunities for those working in the field.
